Book: Genesis

Focus on the vision God gave you

9 Then he had another dream, and he told it to his brothers. “Listen,” he said, “I had another dream, and this time the sun and moon and eleven stars were bowing down to me.” 10 When he told his father as well as his brothers, his father rebuked him and said, “What is this dream you had? Will your mother and I and your brothers actually come and bow down to the ground before you?” 11 His brothers were jealous of him, but his father kept the matter in mind.

Genesis 37:9-11

A story of Stephen Curry

Stephen Curry is an American professional basketball player for the NBA Golden State Warriors. Here’s what he said about playing basketball as a child.

When it comes to basketball, I was always the smallest kid on my team. I used to use a terrible hook shot from the time I was 14 because I wasn’t strong enough to shoot over my head. So I had to work on that over summer to fix it. It was the worst three months of my life. But there’s a moral to everything: If you take the time to figure out what your dream is, you also have to realize that there’s always going to be work to do.

These days Stephen Curry plays the point guard position on his team and many analysts and players have called him the greatest shooter in NBA history!

It will be hard for Stephen Curry’s fans to imagine his struggling past because of his great success now. So how did he become the best shooter in NBA history? How did he overcome his past shortcomings? Simply put, he always kept his vision in mind and did his best at all times and in any situation.

Joseph, the 11th son of Jacob, was also a man like this. He became one of the most distinguished statesmen of all time, when the Egyptian Pharaoh pulled him out of prison and made him Prime Minister of Egypt. And as Prime Minister, Joseph demonstrated his outstanding effort and ability in various fields.

When a person focuses on their vision, they are able to achieve tremendous personal success. But when a person concentrates on God’s vision for their lives, they can become someone who saves the lives of their family or country.

But just as Stephen Curry hadn’t always been a superstar basketball player, neither had Joseph been much of a superstar in his early days either. In fact, the word “sin” in Hebrew actually means “to miss the mark.” So, in this way, both Stephen Curry and Joseph can be said to have had sin in their youth when they missed the targets they were aiming at.

Joseph’s sin

Genesis 37:2; 6-8

2 This is the account of Jacob.  Joseph, a young man of seventeen, was tending the flocks with his brothers, the sons of Bilhah and the sons of Zilpah, his father`s wives, and he brought their father a bad report about them.

6 He said to them, “Listen to this dream I had: 7 We were binding sheaves of grain out in the field when suddenly my sheaf rose and stood upright, while your sheaves gathered around mine and bowed down to it.” 8 His brothers said to him, “Do you intend to reign over us? Will you actually rule us?” And they hated him all the more because of his dream and what he had said.

Joseph was 17 years old at the time of Genesis 37. In his youth, he lacked understanding and consideration for his brothers, and even his parents. He was proud and bragged about his dream, telling his father and his half-brothers that they were wrong. So Joseph’s brothers hated Joseph.

Additionally, Jacob blessed Joseph alone with a special set of luxurious clothes. This caused Joseph’s brothers to become even more jealous of him because their father favored him. Had Joseph understood his brother’s position, he may not have worn the luxurious clothes his father gave him. But Joseph was not sensitive to the hearts and feelings of his brothers. So, he wore those clothes all the time despite their jealousy. This was Joseph’s sin.

God protected Joseph

Genesis 37:18-20

18 But they saw him in the distance, and before he reached them, they plotted to kill him. 19 “Here comes that dreamer!” they said to each other. 20 “Come now, let’s kill him and throw him into one of these cisterns and say that a ferocious animal devoured him. Then we’ll see what comes of his dreams.”

Joseph naively approached his brothers and entered into a crisis of his own making that could have killed him because of his sin. But God saved Joseph twice from the crisis of death by his murderous brothers.

The first help provided by God came from Joseph’s brother, Reuben.

Genesis 37:21-22

21 The first help of God came from Joseph’s brother, Reuben. 22 “Don`t shed any blood. Throw him into this cistern here in the desert, but don’t lay a hand on him.” Reuben said this to rescue him from them and take him back to his father.

God’s second help came from Joseph’s brother, Judah.

Genesis 37:26-27

26 Judah said to his brothers, “What will we gain if we kill our brother and cover up his blood? 27 Come, let’s sell him to the Ishmaelites and not lay our hands on him; after all, he is our brother, our own flesh and blood.” His brothers agreed.

God made Reuben and Judah be merciful to Joseph, their own brother, through His sovereignty. Joseph’s life was saved, but he was eventually sold to Midianite merchants as a slave by his brothers. The Midianites then sold Joseph in Egypt to Potiphar, one of Pharaoh’s officials, the captain of the guard.

The reason God saved Joseph from the crisis of death despite his sin was because God had previously conveyed His vision of the future to Joseph through a dream. Joseph clearly remembered the two dreams he had, and later focused on the vision God gave him in times of crisis, such as his current slavery.

Joseph focused on God’s vision

We can see how Joseph has changed from his previous immaturity in the following passage where Joseph tries to live God’s word and plan.

Genesis 39:7-9

7 and after a while his master’s wife took notice of Joseph and said, “Come to bed with me!” 8 But he refused. “With me in charge,” he told her, “my master does not concern himself with anything in the house; everything he owns he has entrusted to my care. 9 No one is greater in this house than I am. My master has withheld nothing from me except you, because you are his wife. How then could I do such a wicked thing and sin against God?”

When Joseph was 17 years old, he was immature. He had little interest in others and also did not know how to love or be loved by his own family. Then, he was sold into slavery by his own brothers as punishment for how he’d wronged them.

But Joseph matured as he grew up during that hardship because God was with him and kept him from harm. During his suffering, Joseph thought of God and turned to Him at all times. He asked God for help and for wisdom, and slowly, God began to fix Joseph’s weaknesses and sins one by one.

After many years in slavery, and many more years in prison in Pharaoh’s dungeon, an opportunity arose in which Jospeh could assist the Pharaoh by interpreting his nightmare dreams. Out of all the magicians and ministers in Egypt, only Joseph was able to correctly interpret the dreams God had sent to Pharaoh, and so predict the future prosperity and famine of Egypt. Pharaoh saw that Joseph was wise, and no longer proud, and so he set him in charge of the preparations for the next 7 years of prosperity and 7 years of famine. In this, God’s will was achieved, and Joseph became Prime Minister of Egypt because there was no one better than him in all of Egypt to manage such work.

Joseph grew up in difficult circumstances, but after his wake-up call of being sold into slavery, he realized that he wasn’t the center of his universe, and put God in the rightful place as Lord of his life. From then on, he always tried to accompany God, and in so doing, Joseph’s weaknesses, sins, problems, and immaturity have all melted away and transformed into something better in his relationship with God.

Jesus is our vision

Although Joseph’s sin in the past had caused him much hardship and suffering, he grew up and became the prime minister of Egypt by focusing on God’s vision. Then, through Joseph, the son sold into slavery, God’s chosen people, the family of Jacob and the beginning of the nation of Israel, survived a great famine. And Joseph’s policy of dealing with famine also saved the nation of Egypt. Amazing the transformation God will undertake in a person’s life who commits themselves to his vision.

Philippians 2:5-11

5 Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus: 6 Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped, 7 but made himself nothing, taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. 8 And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself and became obedient to death — even death on a cross!

9 Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name, 10 that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11 and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

Just as Stephen Curry and Joseph had much sin (“missing the mark”) in the past, everyone has their own fatal sins. What are our sins? Where have we missed the mark and broken God’s Law? What fragile part of us will prevent us from moving forward in victory? How can we overcome our sin?

Just as God gave Joseph a vision in his dreams, he’s also given us a vision in the person of Jesus Christ.

When we focus on our weaknesses and sins, we feel frustrated and limited. But when we focus on Jesus, we are on the path of change with hope.

Through Jesus’ obedience, God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name. When we call Jesus’ name and confess him as our salvation, he will fulfill his vision through us. But there is something important that we need to remember for this. Joseph focused on God’s vision, not his own personal success. As a result, God’s vision became Joseph’s power, which saved the lives of many people.

I hope that we will live as disciples of Jesus, and not pursue our own personal successes. When you confess Jesus as your savior, your weakness and sin will become the pathway to God. When you set your vision as a life that resembles Jesus, our greatest example and role model, your life, and all the lives you touch will be revived. When Jesus becomes the master of your life, you will confess that even the difficult problem, trial, or suffering is by God’s grace, and by God’s grace, he’ll see you through it.

This is the privilege God has given Christians as children of God.

Please set your vision to achieve the will of Jesus. And I hope that you will appreciate God’s grace and enjoy your growing faith every single day.
