Series: Who Is God?

Book: Genesis

God, who loves beginners

1 The LORD had said to Abram, “Leave your country, your people and your father`s household and go to the land I will show you.

2 “I will make you into a great nation and I will bless you; I will make your name great, and you will be a blessing.

3 I will bless those who bless you, and whoever curses you I will curse; and all peoples on earth will be blessed through you.”

4 So Abram left, as the LORD had told him; and Lot went with him. Abram was seventy-five years old when he set out from Haran.

5 He took his wife Sarai, his nephew Lot, all the possessions they had accumulated and the people they had acquired in Haran, and they set out for the land of Canaan, and they arrived there.

Genesis 12:1-5

0. How to ride a bicycle

Let’s think about our childhood for a moment.

Many people have memories of their childhood, in which they practiced riding bicycles in the park. The first time you try to ride a bicycle, everyone is a beginner.

You must try and fail many times before learning how to ride a bicycle.

But, here are a few considerations for beginners who want to learn to ride a bicycle but are afraid of failure:

Number one, Training wheels.

These are small wheels installed on the left and right sides of the back tire that help the bike not to fall until the beginner can begin to learn how to balance the bike.

Number two, encouragement from the teacher.

Encouragement is a very important value that gives someone the courage and strength to get up and try again even in the face of ongoing failure.

Now, Thanks to these two considerations, beginners can more quickly learn to ride their bicycles alone.

Now, The beginner has grown and he or she is no longer a beginner on a bicycle!

The way we live as children of God is similar to how we learn to ride bicycles.

Just as there are many considerations for a person to learn how to ride a bicycle, there are also the considerations of God for us who want to live as his children.

Today, I will share from Genesis 12 with the title of < God who loves beginners>

1 God, who is generous to us

Genesis 12:2

2 “I will make you into a great nation and I will bless you; I will make your name great, and you will be a blessing.

Those who live as children of God have special authority and responsibility.

But God, who met Abram first, instructed him with a special emphasis on his authority rather than his responsibility.

This is like a mother who gives a piece of sweet apple pie to a child who does not want to eat bitter vegetables.

At that time, Abram was still a beginner in front of God.

We remember Abraham as “the father of faith,” so it may sound strange to us to say that he was once just a beginner.

But We can find his beginnings in the Bible.

The First evidence that Abram was just a beginner in faith is that he did not ask God first before he decided on something.

When he starved in Canaan, the land of promise, he decided to move to Egypt.

Then, When he arrived in Egypt, he introduced his wife to the Egyptians as his sister.

But this was a lie.

All these decisions were made by Abram himself without God.

The Second evidence that Abram was just a beginner in faith is that he did not fully understand God’s sovereignty.

Abram thought of God as a person who gave him good things.

But he did not know that God’s sovereignty would affect other people who do not yet know him.

So Abram did not understand that God was accompanying him in Egypt.

The Third evidence that Abram was just a beginner in faith is that God had not yet acknowledged his faith.

This eventually happened, however, after Abram raised the knife to sacrifice his precious son Isaac. God said, “Now I know that you fear God, because you have not withheld from me your son, your only son.”

For this reason, God changed his name from ‘Abram’ to ‘Abraham’, which means “father of many nations.”

This happened when Abram was 100 years old.

In terms of faith, Abram, at the age of 75 in this passage, can be seen as in the childhood of his faith. He therefore needed to spend much more time with God in order to become “the father of faith” that we know him as today.

2. God, who leads us the right way

Genesis 12:11-13

11 As he was about to enter Egypt, he said to his wife Sarai, “I know what a beautiful woman you are.

12 When the Egyptians see you, they will say, `This is his wife.` Then they will kill me but will let you live.

13 Say you are my sister, so that I will be treated well for your sake and my life will be spared because of you.”

In Genesis 12, Abram was at a crossroads about whether to starve in the land of Canaan or to consign his body to the people of Egypt who had food.

So, Abram decided to sacrifice his wife Sarai in a difficult situation.

This decision saved Abram’s life, but he lost his wife.

The Pharaoh of Egypt even gave him many gifts in return for his wife.

We can see through this situation that Abram was still a beginner in faith and did not even consider that God might help him.

Genesis 12:17

17 But the LORD inflicted serious diseases on Pharaoh and his household because of Abram`s wife Sarai.

However, God did not reproach Abram for causing this problem,

but rather made a great disaster for the Pharaoh who believed Abram’s lies.

What caused God to do this?

First, Abram’s faith in God was still weak.

Abram believed in himself first rather than relying first on God.

God would have known that it would be useless to simply tell Abram, weak in faith, the right way to go, so instead he had to show him.

Second, the situation in which the king and Sarai found themselves was urgent, and may have caused them to sin against God.

God’s plan for salvation for the whole world was to come through the descendants of Abram.

However, Abram’s bad decision could have destroyed God’s plan of salvation.

Abram’s poor choices may have led to more falsehood and adultery.

These are the obvious sins that appear in ‘the Ten Commandments’ that God gave to Moses in the distant future.

But God protected Abram, the beginner in faith, and led him back to the right path.

We can learn a lesson from his situation.

As God said to Abram in verse 3, “I will bless those who bless you, and whoever curses you I will curse;” so likewise, he will do to us. To those who accompany God, he will bless them in order to be a blessing to the people around them. But for those who do not accompany God, they will become curses to the people around them.

3. God, who gives us grace

Genesis 12:18-20

18 So Pharaoh summoned Abram. “What have you done to me?” he said. “Why didn`t you tell me she was your wife?

19 Why did you say, `She is my sister,` so that I took her to be my wife? Now then, here is your wife. Take her and go!”

20 Then Pharaoh gave orders about Abram to his men, and they sent him on his way, with his wife and everything he had.

Abram eventually left Egypt, but he had lost nothing in God’s grace.

And Although Abram did not ask God for help, God helped solve Abram’s problem.

Isn’t that interesting?

God came to Abram before Abram went looking for God.

God is coming to us today as well. He seeks us first, and calls us before we call him.

God wants to help us solve our problems.

This is the wonderful grace of God.

Why did God help Abram?

What kind of person does God help?

Genesis 12:6-8

6 Abram traveled through the land as far as the site of the great tree of Moreh at Shechem. At that time the Canaanites were in the land.

7 The LORD appeared to Abram and said, “To your offspring I will give this land.” So he built an altar there to the LORD, who had appeared to him.

8 From there he went on toward the hills east of Bethel and pitched his tent, with Bethel on the west and Ai on the east. There he built an altar to the LORD and called on the name of the LORD.

Abram found favor with God because he had an open mind to God.

Shechem and Bethel were old Canaan city states, each having a place of worship.

In the ‘Great tree of Moreh at Shechem’, ‘Moreh’ means ‘Telling the fortune’.

In other words, the places of worship in Shechem and Bethel were the places where the Canaanites served their gods. But Abram used those places to meet his God.

God loved Abram, who was so happy to meet him and God gives mercy to those who want to be with him Like Abram did.

Do you have a negative image of God?

That is a sad misunderstanding of his character.

God wants us to enjoy freedom and happiness in him as his children.

Confess that God is so good to us!

Remember the goodness that God has given us!

Please express your gratitude to God!

And may God’s mercy fill our lives!

4. God, who loves beginners.

We must understand God’s wonderful providence for Abram.

In Abram’s time, belonging to a family or clan was very important for human survival.

But God pulled Abram out of his community that guaranteed his safety.

And God led Abram to rely only on God for help.

Joshua 24:2

2 Joshua said to all the people, “This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: `Long ago your forefathers, including Terah the father of Abraham and Nahor, lived beyond the River and worshiped other gods.

The amazing thing is that Abram’s father, Terah, was a man who served another god.

But God led Abram and his family to the land of Haran through Terah.

Haran was an area in the middle of Promised Land, Canaan and Abram’s hometown was Ur.

At that time, God began the ministry of salvation through Abram and Sarai and it was the blessing of Abraham, given by God, that would eventually be passed on to all people.

This blessing of salvation for mankind is Jesus Christ, God’s only son, who came to earth as a man, lived a perfect sinless life, and died in our place on a cross, taking our sin and our death penalty for sin upon himself!

This is God’s amazing plan, and at the same time, it’s a joyful news of life for us.

God is the one who ultimately fulfills every vision he promised despite the many mistakes of the people who serve him.

Abram was a beginner in faith, but he had a pure heart looking toward God.

So even though Abram sinned and made many human mistakes, God granted him mercy through his great plan of salvation.

And look at us, We keep on making mistakes in our lives because we are human beings.

But we should not be discouraged.

Rather, we must honestly acknowledge our shortcomings and go to God who (stubbornly) loves us anyway.

So Don’t be disappointed in yourself by always focusing on your mistakes and failures!

Rather, Focus on the grace and mercy of God who loves us even when we don’t deserve it, and substituted his son for us in death even when we did deserve it!

There will be freedom in our lives from the Lord!

Confess Jesus as the master of your life!

He will be our shepherd and lead us to his resting place!
