God’s Nonsense Quiz
13 Then the LORD said to Abraham, “Why did Sarah laugh and say, `Will I really have a child, now that I am old?` 14 Is anything too hard for the LORD? I will return to you at the appointed time next year and Sarah will have a son.”

0. Introduction (Nonsense Quiz)
Today’s sermon is titled “God’s Nonsense Quiz” and comes from Genesis 18. To begin, let me give you a few nonsense quiz questions. You’ll have five seconds to guess the right answer.
Number one.
- Q.) What are two things people never eat before breakfast?
- A.) Lunch and dinner.
Number two.
- Q.) Why did the man throw butter out the window?
- A.) He wanted to see the butterfly.
Number three.
- Q.) What has a neck, but no head?
- A.) A bottle.
There must be someone who is enjoying this quiz right now. Ha ha ha.
As you know, these quizzes are made just for fun and are not realistic.
But if someone were to insist that these questions and answers were not jokes, but were instead to be taken very seriously, we would consider it ridiculous. It’s common sense. Jokes like these are made to be taken lightly, not seriously.
1. The Nonsense Quiz Questioner
God revealed himself to Abraham in the form of a human in order to give him a type of nonsense quiz. Did Abraham recognize God? Would he have been able to solve this nonsense quiz?
Genesis 18:1-2
1 The LORD appeared to Abraham near the great trees of Mamre while he was sitting at the entrance to his tent in the heat of the day. 2 Abraham looked up and saw three men standing nearby. When he saw them, he hurried from the entrance of his tent to meet them and bowed low to the ground.
After reading this text, we can see that the guest who came to Abraham is God.
But, whereas we, the readers, can see the truth at once from the text, it took some extra time for the participants in these events, Abraham and Sarah, to recognize the identity of their guests. We can recognize this fact by Abraham’s politely bowed greeting to the strange guests.
The important thing here is that Abraham eventually recognized that God was revealing himself through the guests. After a time, he was able to realize this because he was one who closely accompanied God, and recognized his ways and character. God, who had an intimate relationship with Abraham, chose to reveal himself in this way, but it was not a method that was familiar to Abraham.
This time, God visited Abraham in a way that he could never have expected.
Likewise, God occasionally visits us in ways that we can’t expect from time to time.
God visits us through people, through problems, even through our emotions.
The reason we should develop an intimate relationship with God and accompany him through the Word and Prayer is so that we are able to recognize God when he reveals himself to us. We should be able to find God in our daily lives, even if he comes to us with a seemingly nonsense quiz.
While this text reveals that three guests visited Abraham, there is no conclusive evidence as to whether God appeared along with two other people or whether he revealed himself as one of three angels. However, ancient biblical scholars have suggested that the secret of the Trinity God was indirectly revealed here in that there were three travelers that came to Abraham at once.
2. Nonsense quiz
Genesis 18:9-10
9 “Where is your wife Sarah?” they asked him. “There, in the tent,” he said. 10 Then the LORD said, “I will surely return to you about this time next year, and Sarah your wife will have a son.” Now Sarah was listening at the entrance to the tent, which was behind him.
Here, finally is the nonsense quiz of God, given to Abraham, after Abraham served him in the tent. To paraphrase the question behind God’s promise: “How can a 99-year old man and an 89-year old woman give birth to a son?”
How could Abraham and Sarah answer God’s promise?
3. People trapped in common sense
Genesis 18:11-12
11 Abraham and Sarah were already old and well advanced in years, and Sarah was past the age of childbearing. 12 So Sarah laughed to herself as she thought, “After I am worn out and my master is old, will I now have this pleasure?”
God, expecting a confession of faith, must have been disappointed by their initial reaction.
Sarah thought that the promise of having a son was far too ridiculous because she and her husband were much too old. So Sarah laughed out loud to herself.
Sarah, at 89-years old, was a very down-to-earth, realistically-minded, common-sense based person. Look again at chapter 17 to see how Abraham answered this nonsense quiz previously.
Genesis 17:17-18
17 Abraham fell facedown; he laughed and said to himself, “Will a son be born to a man a hundred years old? Will Sarah bear a child at the age of ninety?” 18 And Abraham said to God, “If only Ishmael might live under your blessing!”
Abraham also disappointed God with his answer.
The Bible reveals the limits of human possibilities in this way.
But the part we should pay careful attention to is the subject of the nonsense quiz.
If a human presents a nonsense quiz, for example, it is only nonsense for fun, as a joke.
But if God presents a nonsense quiz, the answer to that nonsense quiz is going to become reality in the future because God is not bound by the same limitations of space and time and the physical world that we are. His Word is powerful – enough to create the entire cosmos from nothing – and what he says must be achieved.
Humanly speaking, sometimes the Word of God looks like a nonsense quiz to us. But if we look carefully at the Word with eyes of faith, his Word will become an amazing gift to our lives, as he reveals himself to us in new and exciting ways.
Too often, we look at the world too much like Sarah, with too much common sense. We judge the world based on our human experiences in a life lived for much less than one hundred years. But we must look to the Almighty God, the Alpha and Omega, the beginning and end. He is not bound by time, and he is not limited by the laws of physics. His will and his Word will be true in the time he sets forth for it. There is no stopping it.
4. Nonsense Quiz : The Vision of God
Genesis 18:13-15
13 Then the LORD said to Abraham, “Why did Sarah laugh and say, `Will I really have a child, now that I am old?` 14 Is anything too hard for the LORD? I will return to you at the appointed time next year and Sarah will have a son.” 15 Sarah was afraid, so she lied and said, “I did not laugh.” But he said, “Yes, you did laugh.”
It was at that moment that Sarah realized that the man who spoke to her was God’s messenger.
She was suddenly afraid and said she did not laugh. God’s messenger replied by scolding her, but also giving a hint of the name Isaac and a fulfillment of God’s promise.
Later, Sarah remembered this event when she named her son Isaac, which means “laughter.”
Genesis 21:6
6 Sarah said, “God has brought me laughter, and everyone who hears about this will laugh with me.”
The word of God, which was like a nonsense quiz in the moment, became the reality of the future. And it turned Sarah’s scoffing laugh of foolishness into a pleasant laugh of joy.
Everyone has doubts about God’s plan because everyone is a sinner.
But our Father God turns even the doubts of his children into faith.
Even our faith depends on God’s sovereignty, because faith itself is a gift of God.
This is the amazing grace God has given us when he recognizes us as his fragile children.
5. The answer to the nonsense quiz : Jesus
Now, it’s time to solve the nonsense quiz that God gives us.
Question: “As God revealed himself to Abraham, how has God revealed himself to us?”
The answer is “Jesus Christ.” However, this confession is not something that we can claim to know on our own, by our own human wisdom.
John 10:32-33
32 but Jesus said to them, “I have shown you many great miracles from the Father. For which of these do you stone me?” 33 “We are not stoning you for any of these,” replied the Jews, “but for blasphemy, because you, a mere man, claim to be God.”
Jesus’ words sounded like a nonsense quiz to the Jews at that time.
In fact, they accused him of blasphemy for the way he spoke.
Think about it. Common sense tells us it is impossible that God, a spirit in heaven, changed himself into the shape of a man, and revealed himself to his creation by coming down to the earth in flesh to walk among his creation. If this confession is difficult for us to make, those of us who can see the full story in God’s Word, how much more difficult would it have been at that time, for the participants IN the story?
However, the disciples who followed Jesus were able to confess that Jesus was the only son of God through the faith that God specifically gave them.
God gave Abram and Sarai new names, calling them Abraham and Sarah.
But their faith did not match the new names God gave them.
Nevertheless, God worked his amazing plan out in their lives, and by doing so, he blessed them with deep faith in him and turned them into people who could then confess their faith.
In this way, God began to prepare the path of salvation for all mankind through the descendants of Abraham. His ultimate purpose was to become a human like us, to meet with us most intimately and closely, to minister to us in person, to empathize with us, to perform miracles and preach of his kingdom, and ultimately to become the once-for-all sacrifice for the sins of all the world, restoring us to a right relationship with him if we have faith in him, and taking upon himself the penalty of death for sin we were all born with.
The answer to this plan, and the ultimate answer to any question we may have, is Jesus Christ.
- God has become our role model and example through Jesus.
- God has become our friend through Jesus.
- God has become the solver of our problems through Jesus.
- God has become our savior through Jesus.
I hope that when we see God’s nonsense quiz in our lives, we may solve every question with Jesus.

이 본문을 읽은 우리는 아브라함에게 온 손님이 누구인지 알 수 있습니다.
그러나 이와 달리 아브라함과 사라는 손님들의 정체를 시간이 지나면서 알게 되었습니다.
이는 그가 동양식의 공손한 표현으로 낯선 손님에게 인사하는 것을 통해 알 수 있습니다.
그러나 중요한 사실은 아브라함이 결국 손님들이 하나님이라는 사실을 알게 되었다는 것입니다.
그 이유는 그가 하나님과 동행했던 사람이었기 때문입니다.
하나님은 친숙한 아브라함에게 자신을 드러내셨습니다.
이것은 하나님께서 아브라함에게 익숙하게 찾아오신 방식이 아니었습니다.
하나님은 아브라함이 전혀 예상할 수 없는 방식으로 그를 방문하셨습니다.
이처럼 하나님은 우리가 예상할 수 없는 방식으로 우리를 방문하십니다.
하나님은 사람을 통해서, 문제를 통해서 심지어는 우리의 감정을 통해서도 찾아오십니다.
우리가 말씀과 기도를 통해 하나님과 동행해야 하는 이유는 바로 나에게 오신 하나님을 알아채기위함 입니다. 우리는 우리를 기쁘게 만드는 재미있는 넌센스 퀴즈를 가지고 오시는 하나님을 우리 삶에서 발견할 수 있어야 합니다.
하나님이 두 사람을 데리고 나타나셨는지 아니면 세 천사를 통해 한 분으로 나타나셨는지에 대해서는 본문은 해결하지 않은 상태로 남겨두었습니다.
교부들은 나그네가 셋이라는 점에서 삼위일체 하나님의 비밀이 간접적으로 나타나 있다고 생각했습니다.
2. 넌센스 퀴즈
창 18:9-10
9 그들이 아브라함에게 이르되 네 아내 사라가 어디 있느냐 대답하되 장막에 있나이다 10 그가 이르시되 내년 이맘때 내가 반드시 네게로 돌아오리니 네 아내 사라에게 아들이 있으리라 하시니 사라가 그 뒤 장막 문에서 들었더라
아브라함의 대접을 흡족하게 여긴 하나님이 드디어 그에게 넌센스 퀴즈를 내셨습니다.
“90살의 할머니가 아들을 낳는 방법은?”
하나님은 이 질문에 대한 아브라함과 사라의 답이 무엇일까 기대하셨습니다.
3. 상식 속에 갇힌 사람들 (people trapped in common sense)
창 18:11-12
11 아브라함과 사라는 나이가 많아 늙었고 사라에게는 여성의 생리가 끊어졌는지라 12 사라가 속으로 웃고 이르되 내가 노쇠하였고 내 주인도 늙었으니 내게 무슨 즐거움이 있으리요
믿음의 고백을 기대했던 하나님은 그들의 반응에 실망할 수 밖에 없었습니다.
사라는 그들 부부가 너무 늙었기 때문에 아들을 낳게 되리라는 약속이 너무 터무니 없다고 생각했습니다. 그래서 사라는 웃음을 터뜨릴 수 밖에 없었습니다.
90년이라는 오랜 세월을 살아온 사라는 너무나 상식적인 사람이었습니다.
아브라함은 전에 이 넌센스 퀴즈에 대해 어떻게 대답했을까요?
창 17:17-18
17 아브라함이 엎드려 웃으며 마음속으로 이르되 백 세 된 사람이 어찌 자식을 낳을까 사라는 구십 세니 어찌 출산하리요 하고 18 아브라함이 이에 하나님께 아뢰되 이스마엘이나 하나님 앞에 살기를 원하나이다
아브라함의 역시 실망스러운 답을 제출하였습니다.
성경은 이를 통해 인간의 가능성의 한계를 보여주고 있습니다.
우리가 주목해야 하는 부분은 퀴즈의 출제자가 누구냐 하는 것입니다.
만약 사람이 넌센스 퀴즈를 냈다면, 그것은 재미를 위한 넌센스 일 것입니다.
그러나 하나님이 넌센스 퀴즈를 내셨다면, 그 넌센스의 답은 미래에 이루어질 현실이 될 것입니다.
하나님의 말씀은 강력한 힘이 있고 반드시 성취되기 때문입니다.
사람의 생각으로는 하나님의 말씀이 넌센스 퀴즈처럼 여겨질 때가 있습니다.
그러나 우리가 믿음의 눈으로 말씀을 바라보면 그것은 우리의 삶을 기쁨과 축제로 바꿀 놀라운 선물이 될 것입니다.
우리는 너무 상식적으로 세상을 바라봅니다.
우리는 우리의 100년도 안되는 경험을 근거로 세상을 판단합니다.
우리는 전능하신 하나님을 바라보아야 합니다.
알파와 오메가이신 하나님은 세상의 시작과 끝을 알고 계시기 때문입니다.
4. 넌센스퀴즈 = 하나님의 비전
창 18:13-15
13 여호와께서 아브라함에게 이르시되 사라가 왜 웃으며 이르기를 내가 늙었거늘 어떻게 아들을 낳으리요 하느냐 14 여호와께 능하지 못한 일이 있겠느냐 기한이 이를 때에 내가 네게로 돌아오리니 사라에게 아들이 있으리라 15 사라가 두려워서 부인하여 이르되 내가 웃지 아니하였나이다 이르시되 아니라 네가 웃었느니라
사라는 말씀하시는 분이 여호와의 사자임을 깨달았습니다.
사라는 두려워서 자신이 웃지 않았다고 시치미를 뗐습니다.
하나님 사자의 대답은 사라에 대한 꾸중일 뿐만 아니라 이삭이라는 이름에 대한 암시이며 성취를 나타내었습니다.
창 21:6
6 사라가 이르되 하나님이 나를 웃게 하시니 듣는 자가 다 나와 함께 웃으리로다
넌센스 퀴즈 같았던 하나님의 말씀은 미래의 실제가 되었습니다.
그리고 그 말씀은 사라의 실소를 진정한 기쁨의 웃음으로 바꾸어 놓았습니다.
사람은 누구나 죄인이기 때문에 하나님의 계획에 대해 의심을 가지고 있습니다.
그러나 하나님 아버지는 그의 자녀들의 의심조차 믿음으로 바꾸어 놓으십니다.
우리의 믿음 조차도 하나님의 주권에 달려있는 것입니다.
이것이 하나님이 연약한 우리를 자녀로 삼으시려는 놀라운 은혜입니다.
5. 넌센스퀴즈의 정답 = 예수님
이제 우리는 하나님이 우리에게 주시는 넌센스 퀴즈를 풀어야 합니다.
“나를 구원하시기 위해 사람으로 형상으로 오신 하나님은 누구신가?”
우리는 이 질문에 “예수님”이라고 대답하지만 그 고백은 쉽게 나올 수 있는 것이 아닙니다.
요 10:32-33
32 예수께서 대답하시되 내가 아버지로 말미암아 여러 가지 선한 일로 너희에게 보였거늘 그 중에 어떤 일로 나를 돌로 치려 하느냐 33 유대인들이 대답하되 선한 일로 말미암아 우리가 너를 돌로 치려는 것이 아니라 신성모독으로 인함이니 네가 사람이 되어 자칭 하나님이라 함이로라
그 이유는 예수님의 말이 그 당시 유대인들에게는 넌센스 퀴즈처럼 들렸기 때문입니다.
자세히 말하면, 그들에게 예수님의 말씀은 그보다 더 심한 신성모독으로 들렸습니다.
하나님이 육체를 통해 세상에 내려온다는 것은 그 당시 이해하기 어려운 것이기 때문이었습니다.
그러나 예수님을 따랐던 제자들은 하나님께서 주신 믿음으로 예수님이 하나님의 아들이라는 사실을 고백할 수 있었습니다.
하나님께서 아브람과 사래에게 새 이름을 주셨습니다.
그래서 그들은 아브라함과 사라가 되었습니다.
그러나 그들은 하나님께서 주신 새 이름에 걸맞는 믿음이 없었습니다.
그럼에도 불구하고 하나님께서는 하나님의 놀라운 계획을 성취하셨습니다.
하나님은 아브라함과 사라에게 믿음의 고백을 할 수 있는 사람들로 바꾸어 놓으셨습니다.
그 이유는 하나님이 아브라함의 후손을 통해 우리를 위한 구원의 길을 준비하기 위함이었습니다.
하나님은 최종 목적은 그가 우리와 같은 사람의 모습이 되어 우리를 가장 친밀하고 가깝게 만나는 것이었습니다.
그 하나님의 넌센스 퀴즈 같은 계획의 답이 예수 그리스도 였습니다.
- 하나님은 예수님을 통해 우리의 롤모델이 되셨습니다.
- 하나님은 예수님을 통해 우리의 친구가 되셨습니다.
- 하나님은 예수님을 통해 우리 문제의 해결사가 되셨습니다.
- 하나님은 예수님을 통해 우리의 구원자가 되셨습니다.
우리가 우리 인생에 주신 하나님의 넌센스 퀴즈를 예수님을 통해 해결하길 바랍니다.
