Book: Judges

Knowing God

1 In those days Israel had no king.  And in those days the tribe of the Danites was seeking a place of their own where they might settle, because they had not yet come into an inheritance among the tribes of Israel.

2 So the Danites sent five warriors from Zorah and Eshtaol to spy out the land and explore it. These men represented all their clans. They told them, “Go, explore the land.”  The men entered the hill country of Ephraim and came to the house of Micah, where they spent the night.

Judges 18:1-2

■ Do you have confidence in your life?

Today’s sermon title is <knowing God>, it is taken out of Judges 18.

Do you have confidence in your life?

Or do you think your life is uncertain?

Everyone wants to live with confidence in their lives.

But many people die without being sure about their lives.

What should we do to live our lives with confidence?

In today’s message, we will see two different people who were living their lives without any certainty in Judges 18.

The first is the Danites, one of the twelve tribes of Israel.

■ The uncertain life of the Danites

Judges 18:1-2

1 In those days Israel had no king.  And in those days the tribe of the Danites was seeking a place of their own where they might settle, because they had not yet come into an inheritance among the tribes of Israel.

2 So the Danites sent five warriors from Zorah and Eshtaol to spy out the land and explore it. These men represented all their clans. They told them, “Go, explore the land.”  The men entered the hill country of Ephraim and came to the house of Micah, where they spent the night.

The Danites had one problem to solve.

It was to find their own place to settle down.

Zorah and Eshtaol, the places where they had been staying, were too small for the whole tribe to live in.

It was also difficult to farm the land.

This was an urgent matter to be solved for them.

The reason was that the other tribes in Israel already owned their own land.

But the life of the Danites, who had no land in which to settle permanently, was unstable.

This prevented them from planning their lives and being sure of their future.

Why did the Danites not get their own land?

Joshua 19:40-46

40 The seventh lot came out for the tribe of Dan, clan by clan.

41 The territory of their inheritance included:  Zorah, Eshtaol, Ir Shemesh,

42 Shaalabbin, Aijalon, Ithlah,

43 Elon, Timnah, Ekron,

44 Eltekeh, Gibbethon, Baalath,

45 Jehud, Bene Berak, Gath Rimmon,

46 Me Jarkon and Rakkon, with the area facing Joppa.

In fact, the Danites already had land distributed to them by lot, or a random drawing.

But it was not easy for them to take over the land from the previous inhabitants.

Judges 1:34

34 The Amorites confined the Danites to the hill country, not allowing them to come down into the plain.

The Amorites’ resistance was so strong that it was very difficult to conquer the land.

Inevitably, the Danites gave up occupying the Amorites’ land and decided to find new land.

In fact, it was never easy to conquer these lands that were distributed by lot, not only for the Danites but also for the other tribes in Israel.

But the other tribes in Israel were not overwhelmed by this big problem and instead relied on God, who was bigger than the problem.

Eventually, the other tribes in Israel gained the land of promise by believing in God.

The Israeli tribes that got the promised land became confident in their lives.

But the Danites did not try to conquer the land that God gave them.

Instead They tried to explore new lands by relying on their own judgment.

And They had no faith in God.

So they lived a wandering life because they could not find a place to settle down.

These choices made them uncertain of their lives.

The second person who was living without confidence in life was a young Levite.

He also lived an uncertain life.

■ The uncertain life of a young Levite.

Judges 17:9-10

9 Micah asked him, “Where are you from?”  “I`m a Levite from Bethlehem in Judah,” he said, “and I`m looking for a place to stay.”

10 Then Micah said to him, “Live with me and be my father and priest, and I`ll give you ten shekels of silver a year, your clothes and your food.”

Can you imagine a pastor living together in a shaman’s house?

This unimaginable and ironic situation happened in Judges 17.

The holy person of God, a Levite, stayed in the house of an idol worshiper named Micah.

He even became a priest for Micah’s family.

Why did this young Levite make this choice?

He also had no faith in God.

He had forgotten his mission and wandered because he did not know God well.

The young Levite lived according to his own thoughts, without relying on God.

He liked the high salary that Micah, the owner of the house, offered him.

So the young Levite decided to become a priest in Micah’s house.

■ Meeting with people who do not know God well.

People who do not know God well make each other’s lives more confusing and uncertain.

Judges 18:5-6

5 Then they said to him, “Please inquire of God to learn whether our journey will be successful.”

6 The priest answered them, “Go in peace. Your journey has the LORD`s approval.”

The Danites sent five scouts to look at the land they would reside in.
The five scouts met the young Levite who lived in Micah’s house on the move.

The scouts asked him if their future would be good.

They thought he could discern God’s will because he was a Levite.

But the scouts did not verify that the young Levite was qualified as a priest.

They simply wanted to know God’s will through this Levite.

The problem, however, was that this young Levite did not know God well.

So he just said, “Go in peace. Your journey has the LORD`s approval.”

It was a vague word and it was hard to fully understand whether the Danites’ future would be good or bad.

The young Levite did not ask for God’s will.

He just said what the people wanted to hear.

So the Scouts led the Danites to attack Laish based on the young man’s words.

But, When the Danites and the young Levite, who do not know God well, met, something unrelated to God’s plan happened.

It was the destruction of those who were living peacefully in Laish because of the attack of the Danites.

The Danites and the young Levite later united to occupy Laish.

But nonetheless, they had no clear belief in the future.

In fact, The Danites are left out of the list of tribes to be saved on Judgment Day in Revelation 7:5-8

What can we learn from this?

Those who live without trying to know God more will be destroyed on the day of judgment.

Think of Abraham’s nephew Lot, who chose a good place in his own eyes.

He and his family were also unable to escape the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah.

What should we do to live with confidence in our lives?

■ Try to know God more(through Jesus Christ)

1 Corinthians 1:9

9 God, who has called you into fellowship with his Son Jesus Christ our Lord, is faithful.

We must strive to know God more.

Because God leads the life of his intimate disciples.

God’s child may not know his future, but he can live his life with confidence in God.

We, sinners, cannot meet God who is completely good.

Because God cannot be with sin.

So, God sent Jesus Christ to us to intimately engage with us.

And When we confess Jesus as our savior, God meets us.

Pray in the name of Jesus.

Praise and worship Jesus.

Rely on Jesus when reading the Bible.

The greater your wisdom and knowledge of God, the more confident you will be about your life.
