Series: Who Is God?

Book: Genesis

Let’s live a God centered life

1 Now the whole world had one language and a common speech.

2 As men moved eastward, they found a plain in Shinar and settled there.

3 They said to each other, “Come, let`s make bricks and bake them thoroughly.” They used brick instead of stone, and tar for mortar.

4 Then they said, “Come, let us build ourselves a city, with a tower that reaches to the heavens, so that we may make a name for ourselves and not be scattered over the face of the whole earth.”

5 But the LORD came down to see the city and the tower that the men were building.

Genesis 11:1~5

0. A charming world culture

Today, I will share the words of Genesis 11 with the title of <Let’s Live a God-centered Life>.

Let me begin with a simple question: Do you have a credit card?

Many of the adults in the world’s developed countries own at least one credit card. But there is at least one very special card that only 10,000 people in the world can own.

This is the “American Express Black Card” used by the world’s richest people.

The basic conditions for using this card are:

Subscription fee: 6 million won

Annual fee: 3 million won

Annual expenditure: 250 million won

To own this card, you must have no problems with your financial and credit records and your annual income must be at the highest level. But that’s not all, you must also have a high social standing and recognition.

The main benefits of this card are:

1. An automatic upgrade to first class seats when booking an airplane (all airlines)

2. Support for shopping assistants, if shopping in any major metropolis in the world

3. Support for the use of top-level travel agencies and tour guides when traveling

4. Providing personal shopping services before or after business hours at famous stores and luxury goods stores around the world

5. Providing VIP seats at major concerts and sporting events

A few notable celebrities who have this card are movie star Denzel Washington, singer Beyonce, soccer player David Beckham, and so on.

If you have the American Express Black Card, it means you are one of the most influential and famous people in the world.

Therefore, socially successful people around the world struggle to own this card.

Those who already have it are envied by others and become proud of their own high value.

So, What if you were a very successful person and had a chance to own this card?

I guess Each person’s decision would vary.

But the important thing is that this card looks attractive to us because it makes the owner of the card even more powerful and influential.

Surprisingly, however, this card actually has no real intrinsic value.

Rather, Its value is assigned to it by people.

So because there is no inherent value in this card, that means that it will one day disappear

The card itself is temporary, but we, as human beings, must make a wise choice of eternal value.

What is that choice? We must choose Only the things that God has created and assigned eternal value to, because he is the ultimate authority on all things.

1. The reason why people are enthusiastic about worldly values

Why do people go crazy about worldly values?

The reason is that these values look very attractive and sweet, like the fruit of the knowledge of good and evil.

But ever since Adam and Eve ate of that fruit, Everyone is born with a sin nature and a self-centered, people-centered worldview, which causes us to pursue these worldly values.

The “Tower of Babel” provides a good example of this phenomenon.

2. The Characteristics of the Tower of Babel (historically)

First, let’s look at the characteristics of the Tower of Babel from a historical point of view.

Genesis 10:5

5 (about Japheth’s descendants) From these the maritime peoples spread out into their territories by their clans within their nations, each with its own language.

Genesis 10:20

20 These are the sons of Ham by their clans and languages, in their territories and nations.

Genesis 10:31

31 These are the sons of Shem by their clans and languages, in their territories and nations.

Genesis 11:1

1 Now the whole world had one language and a common speech.

Genesis 11 is linked to the era before the events mentioned in Genesis 10.

Genesis 10 assumes that mankind is geographically scattered and speaks several languages.

The linguistically unified human race mentioned in Genesis 11 has moved from the prehistory east to the Shinar Plains of Mesopotamia.

In the story of the Tower of Babel, the word ‘Babel’ is interpreted as having a similar pronunciation to the Hebrew word for ‘mixed’.

Thus, as a reader of the Bible, we can expect that God will ‘mix up’ mankind in the future as the name of this tower implies.

This Tower of Babel differs from Cain’s walled city of Enoch in its purpose.

The walled city of Enoch can also be referred to as Enoch Castle and its purpose was to protect Cain himself. The ‘Tower of Babel’ on the other hand, was a human challenge to God’s greatness.

The challenge to God seen in building the Tower of Babel has something in common with the evil intentions of the person who tried to eat the fruit of knowledge of good and evil.

3. The Characteristics of the Tower of Babel

(from a human’s point of view)

Why would people want to build the Tower of Babel? And why would God hate it?

We may never fully understand the thoughts of those who tried to build the Tower of Babel.

But in the same way that a nice car, a luxury watch, or a luxury bag seem attractive to us, the Tower of Babel would have seemed very attractive to them at the time.

The Tower of Babel demonstrated the strong will of people to create a human-centered world through the union of mankind. People wanted to become stronger, even stronger than God, by gathering their power around the Tower of Babel.

They would have had a desire to build their own utopia, in which they could do whatever they wanted, based on their own strength and will.

These People had a desire to make their own names and achievements great through the building of the Tower of Babel.

They wanted to achieve historically great things by their own power without the help of God.

But this is the pride of a creature which has ignored its creator.

The People would have admired the construction of the Tower of Babel from afar saying,

“I can’t believe we’ve built such a wonderful, tall tower!”

They would have been ecstatic because they thought they would leave a great legacy on earth, and that their names would be remembered forever.

4. The Characteristics of the Tower of Babel

(from the perspective of God)

But What did God think when he looked at the Tower of Babel?

Genesis 11:4-5

4 Then they said, “Come, let us build ourselves a city, with a tower that reaches to the heavens, so that we may make a name for ourselves and not be scattered over the face of the whole earth.”

5 But the LORD came down to see the city and the tower that the men were building.

In the eyes of the people, the top of the Tower of Babel seemed to reach all the way to heaven. So for the people, the tower was simply a huge building, a skyscraper proclaiming their greatness and power to the world.

But in God’s eyes, the tower was so tiny that he had to come down to inspect it closely.

God saw that the Tower of Babel looked very tiny and observed the absurdity of the people who tried to challenge him. How can a created thing elevate itself above the one who created it? This is beyond absurd. And in the case of God, it is a deadly sin.

We know that in general, the consequences of those who disobey God are judgment and death.

But the amazing thing is that God was gracious to those who built the Tower of Babel.

Instead of judging them and condemning them to death on the spot, he simply mixed up their language.

Genesis 9:16-17

16 Whenever the rainbow appears in the clouds, I will see it and remember the everlasting covenant between God and all living creatures of every kind on the earth.”

17 So God said to Noah, “This is the sign of the covenant I have established between me and all life on the earth.”

We can see the grace of God in the sign of the covenant, in the rainbow.

This covenant is an unconditional promise that God will preserve all life on earth.

Because of this promise, the people were able to keep their lives despite being guilty of sin.

God, by his very nature, cannot lie, and must fulfill his promises, including that given to Noah to never again destroy all life on earth.

Now, these days, With the further development and advancement of science and technology, the present human race has become much richer than in the past.

However, new problems such as “anxiety” and “the mixing of societal norms, values, and ethics” have emerged.

These new problems may cause people who seem to be healthy on the outside to often have great pain in their inner world.

Genesis 11:6

6 The LORD said, “If as one people speaking the same language they have begun to do this, then nothing they plan to do will be impossible for them.

This means that a wholly human-centered worldview eventually plants the seeds of unpredictable outcomes in the future.

The human-centered culture that has been achieved without God eventually creates an era of uncertainty in which “truth” has all but disappeared.

In this case, God has mercifully broken down the people’s worldly plans so that they would not self-destruct and suffer unfortunate results.

God stopped those who were running toward their own desires and gave them the grace of mixing up their language in order to protect their peace and life.

However, this is not the end of the descendants of Shem.

Genesis 11:10, 27

10 This is the account of Shem.  Two years after the flood, when Shem was 100 years old, he became the father of Arphaxad.

27 This is the account of Terah.  Terah became the father of Abram, Nahor and Haran. And Haran became the father of Lot.

Although the people sinned against God and disappointed him by building the Tower of Babel, God’s vision remained hopeful for the coming generation, not in despair over them.

God soon began his salvation work for mankind only through Abraham, the father of faith.

And his salvation plan was finally completed through Jesus Christ.

You see, God had already had a plan of salvation for the people even before they began building the Tower of Babel.

The events at Babel caused God to scatter the people and destroy their towers due to their human arrogance and evil motives.

But the ultimate goal of God’s salvation is to overcome the barriers of language and understanding between peoples and cultures, between people and God, and to become a unified community of salvation.

Act of the Apostles 2:1~4

1 When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place.

2 Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting.

3 They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them.

4 All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them.

The miracle of Pentecost, which broke down the barriers of language, is a symbolic event that demonstrates the goal of God’s salvation.

And at the heart of the community of salvation is Jesus Christ.

If there is Jesus Christ in the place where people gather, the meeting is full of life, love and peace.

If there is no Jesus Christ in the place where people gather, the meeting is full of death, indifference and anxiety.

5. How to Live as a Christian in a Secular Culture

We know that the value of the world will not last forever.

So how do we live as Christians in a secular culture?

First, We must pursue the values of God as disciples of Jesus Christ.

But when we live in a secular culture, it is often difficult to follow the values of God.

So should we leave the city and go quietly into the mountains in order to pursue the values of God in peace and tranquility?

No.

We must focus on where God’s vision is directed.

God wants to pass the gospel message along to those who do not him through us.

So God’s vision is directed toward those who do not yet know him.

This is The reason we need to understand the world! We need to know the values of the world in order to inform it about Jesus! He called us to live in the world, but not become of the world. In other words, we are not to allow the values of the world to pollute our minds, but rather we are to shine the light of Jesus into the darkness of the world! This is a secular culture we live in.

So we need to have the wisdom to both understand and use the culture and values of the world in order to convey the gospel message clearly and directly to it.

Matthew 10:16

16 I am sending you out like sheep among wolves. Therefore be as shrewd as snakes and as innocent as doves.

This is what Jesus said when he sent his twelve disciples out into the world.

It is also a necessary word for us living in the present day.

We must live as evangelists who preach the gospel to the world, but we must also be careful and alert lest we also be seduced by the world’s values because we are sinners by nature.

It is important to make every effort to help save other people’s lives, but we must first check our own faith lives.

Think deeply about your relationship with God.

Consider clearly how much time you spend with God on a daily basis.

Because ultimately, it is God who does the job of saving the soul.

When we accompany God, he works and moves.

When God works, he changes the mind of a person who does not believe in him and turns it toward him, to put their faith in him as a new Christian.

The important thing is that whatever we do, we must do it all for the glory of God.

1Corinthians 10:31

31 So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.

People assign meaning to their lives in order to live.

But if Jesus Christ does not live in a person’s heart, his or her life will always be empty and sad.

Do you want to live a happy and fulfilled life?

Do you want to live a meaningful life?

Then Whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God!

Confess Jesus Christ as your master and savior.

Many of the problems in your life that have bothered you will dissolve when you finally realize that they are just temporary problems. Once you answer the eternal question with the one who holds eternity in his hands, then every part of life that once felt meaningless and empty will become meaningful and fulfilled.

This is God’s good will for us.
