The Timing of God : Perfection

15 So Hagar bore Abram a son, and Abram gave the name Ishmael to the son she had borne. 16 Abram was eighty-six years old when Hagar bore him Ishmael.

0. Cooking dumplings

A few years ago, I worked at a restaurant to cover my tuition.

The restaurant was a Korean-Japanese fusion restaurant.

There were many items on the menu, but the most difficult item to make was called a “Gyoza dumpling”.

But the gyoza dumpling recipe appears deceptively easy as follows:

  1. Place dumplings in a frying pan
  2. Pour hot water into the pan to the half way point of dumpling
  3. Cover the pan with a lid to cook the dumplings
  4. After setting the timer to 2 minutes, open the lid when the alarm rings
  5. Drain the hot water, and add cooking oil
  6. Fry the dumplings in the oil for 1 minute
  7. Complete the delicious gyoza dumplings with a crispy outside texture and a juicy inside!

At first glance, it seems that anyone can make delicious dumplings by following this recipe.

But when the two-minute timer rings and the lid is opened, sometimes the dumplings are not fully cooked, and sometimes the dumplings are over cooked and burst.

There are even cases when the dumplings get burned due to a lot water level.

I thought the two-minute timer was the standard of time to cook dumplings, but that was not always an absolute standard.

The reason for this is because when cooking dumplings, there are various factors to take into account such as: the total number of dumplings, the temperature of the water, the amount of water, the intensity of the fire, the thickness of the frying pan, and so on.

There was one cook in the restaurant who was extremely good at cooking the gyoza dumplings.

He alone made gyoza dumplings without using a timer at all.

One day, I asked him what the secret was and he replied:

“You must consider various conditions at the same time. So it’s hard to explain specifically.

But for me, it’s easy to know the timing because I have a lot of experience. I’ve been in this store for three years already.”

Through his lengthy experience, he knew the exact timing to make delicious gyoza dumplings.

Likewise for us, it is very important to know the exact timing to achieve something like this. And one good way to learn the exact timing of a thing more quickly and thus reduce failure is by asking experts for advice.

Also, it is very important to know the exact timing required for certain events and situations in our lives.

Because our lives can be more satisfying if we do the right things at the right times, and avoid the wrong times for doing certain things.

Therefore, we need to ask the experts in our lives for advice. But who knows about our lives the best?

Ourselves? Our parents? Our friends? Career counselors?

I’m sure by now you can recognize that the correct answer to this question is God!

Of course God is the one who knows about our lives the best because he is our master who created us.

I’m going to share from Genesis 16 with the title of < The Timing of God : Perfection >.

1. Trying to solve problems without God

Genesis 16:1-3

1 Now Sarai, Abram`s wife, had borne him no children. But she had an Egyptian maidservant named Hagar; 2 so she said to Abram, “The LORD has kept me from having children. Go, sleep with my maidservant; perhaps I can build a family through her.”  Abram agreed to what Sarai said. 3 So after Abram had been living in Canaan ten years, Sarai his wife took her Egyptian maidservant Hagar and gave her to her husband to be his wife.

God made a clear promise to Abram about his descendants, but his wife Sarai still could not conceive.

When Abram left his hometown, Haran, obedient to the Word of God, his wife was 65 years old.

They lived together in the promised land of Canaan for 10 years until Sarai’s became 75.

So by now, Sarai has waited for 10 years believing in God’s promise to give her a child. But from her point of view, after 10 years, God seemed to be not moving at all to achieve that promise.

So Sarai tried to force God to work by getting Abram’s heir through her Egyptian maidservant before it was too late.

We might think that if she had believed more strongly in God’s promise and continued to persevere, it would have been better. (But consider yourself as a human being as well. How easy would it be to hold onto a promise made by someone for over ten years? Could you still believe that promise even after ten years? Even if the promiser was God?)

Besides, this behavior was a common practice at the time.

The absence of children was perceived as a very serious problem because people believed that they could carry on their lives (and family name) through their descendants.

This led to the disdain of a woman who could bear children.

According to old Middle Eastern customs, a wife who could not bear children herself could give her husband her servant in her place to solve this problem.

Because the maid is owned by the wife, the child born by the maid would be considered the property of the wife, her mistress, and therefore could be counted as her own children.

Sarai was trying to provide Abram with children according to social customs of the day.

2. May incur side effects

Genesis 16:4-6

4 He slept with Hagar, and she conceived.  When she knew she was pregnant, she began to despise her mistress. 5 Then Sarai said to Abram, “You are responsible for the wrong I am suffering. I put my servant in your arms, and now that she knows she is pregnant, she despises me. May the LORD judge between you and me.” 6 “Your servant is in your hands,” Abram said. “Do with her whatever you think best.” Then Sarai mistreated Hagar; so she fled from her.

Sarai’s behavior was not a problem according to the social customs of the day.

But this was not what God had intended at all.

So because Sarai attempted to solve her problem without God’s help, we can observe various side effects that resulted from her actions.

As a result of Sarai sending her maidservant to bed with her husband, there arose “contempt” from Hagar toward Sarai, which led to “abuse” from Sarai toward Hagar.

Sarai’s attempt to produce an heir for Abram through her maidservant failed to achieve the goal she wanted, and this is at least partially due to the animosity that arose uncontrolled between them.

The Bible tells us that we can never achieve a desired goal through our own strength or will alone.

3. Our God Saves

Genesis 16:7-11

7 The angel of the LORD found Hagar near a spring in the desert; it was the spring that is beside the road to Shur. 8 And he said, “Hagar, servant of Sarai, where have you come from, and where are you going?”  “I`m running away from my mistress Sarai,” she answered. 9 Then the angel of the LORD told her, “Go back to your mistress and submit to her.” 10 The angel added, “I will so increase your descendants that they will be too numerous to count.” 11 The angel of the LORD also said to her: “You are now with child and you will have a son. You shall name him Ishmael, for the LORD has heard of your misery.

Hagar fled to Shur to avoid the abuse of Sarai.

Shur refers to the fortifications of the border of Egypt, and perhaps Hagar was trying to return to her home land of Egypt.

But then the messenger of God met Hagar and delivered the Word of God to her.

God promised Hagar that although her son was not the son of promise, God would still form a great nation through him.

Hagar confessed that the God who responded to her pain was “the God who sees me”.

Hagar was comforted by God, recovered her heart and returned to Abram’s house and obeyed Sarai.

Her attitude changed because she had experienced God’s grace.

In this way, God solved the problem that a human, Sarai, had brought upon herself.

And God continue to take care of Abram’s family until the time God had promised.

4. The Timing of God : Perfection

Abram was 86 years old when Hagar had Ishmael.

He was 100 years old when Sarai had Isaac.

Can you believe it? Abram had to wait 14 more years after the birth of Ishmael to get the son promised him by God.

Think about it. If you had to wait 24 years for God’s promise to be achieved, your patience would likely be exhausted.

Wouldn’t it just be better for us to solve our own problems than to wait an unknowable amount of time for God’s promise to be realized?

So, now think about Abram’s own circumstances. Why would God postpone the achievement of his promises?

Isn’t it true that if God had kept his promises quickly, the peace of Abram’s family would have been kept?

These thoughts are natural for us to have. They are human thoughts based on what we can observe from outside appearances, but these are not God’s thoughts. Actually, the real reason why God delayed his promise was directly because of Abram and Sarai.

They did not yet rely entirely on God alone.

In their later years, they considered themselves weak.

But actually, they were still very strong, strong-headed because they continuously depended on their own methods of getting things done rather than relying on God. They still had a stronger heart to trust in themselves than a heart to trust fully in God.

So They were not yet ready to receive God’s gift.

Consider again, if Abram and Sarai had easily obtained the Son of Promise in their own way, they would not have needed to fully rely on God.

And This was not the plan God wanted.

So What did God really want?

God’s true purpose was not to provide a blessing for Abram and Sarai, but it went much deeper than that.

Proverbs 16:9

9 In his heart a man plans his course, but the LORD determines his steps.

God’s true purpose is not to satisfy human desire but rather to lead people to obey their master, God, and leave their plans to God, to trust him and rely on him fully.

As sinful, selfish, fallen creatures, A person needs time to give up his or her own desires and plans in order to fully rely on God. So God waited until Abram and Sarai had completely lost their own human power to rely on.

When Abram was 100 years old, he could no longer rely on his power. Abram by now has finally acknowledged that God is the only one who could ever achieve his promise with this old body of his.

God regards full trust and faith in him as righteous, even when that full trust and faith takes years to come around.

So why should we wait for God’s timing?

We must wait on God, because he alone can see the full span of our lives.

Honestly, we don’t have the ability to lead our lives completely on our own because as human beings, we always chase our own human desires, and not the will of God. And as sinful, fallen creatures, the final destination of human desire is always death.

God knew the weakness and evil of man.

To resolve this, God sent his son, Jesus, to us.

If anyone recognizes Jesus as his savior, God will give him the grace of salvation.

The only thing we have to do is surrender to God.

Confess as follows!

  • I cannot save my life without Jesus!
  • I cannot know the meaning of my life without Jesus!
  • I cannot plan my life without Jesus!
  • Jesus is the master of me and my life!

Waiting for God’s timing is never boring if we fully depends on him and trust him that his timing is always best. Now is the time for God to grow our faith and give us his amazing gifts and vision.

  • God’s timing is a joy for us.
  • God’s timing is perfection for us.

Waiting for that timing, I hope you will be happy to accompany God this week!
