The Signs of Believers

Mark 16:15-20 (Pastor Heo)

16:15 He said to them, “Go into all the world and preach the good news to all creation. 16 Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned. 17 And these signs will accompany those who believe: In my name they will drive out demons; they will speak in new tongues; 18 they will pick up snakes with their hands; and when they drink deadly poison, it will not hurt them at all; they will place their hands on sick people, and they will get well.”

19 After the Lord Jesus had spoken to them, he was taken up into heaven and he sat at the right hand of God. 20 Then the disciples went out and preached everywhere, and the Lord worked with them and confirmed his word by the signs that accompanied it.

This is the Great Commission from Christ.

  • In Matthew: “Go and make disciples of all nations…baptizing, teaching… I am with you always to the very end of the age.”
  • Mark “Go and preach the good news to all Creation…”
  • Luke “You are witnesses of all these things…”
  • John “Feed my sheep, feed my lambs…”
  • Acts “You will be my witnesses in Judea, Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”

When Jesus meets people, he says, “Come and I will give you rest.”

Jesus’ invitation is always:

  • “Come” and
  • Go”
  • “Come to me”, to church, to God
  • “Go to the world”
  • Come = attractive force
  • Go = repelling force

Mark is the shortest gospel among the 4. Why? Mark is the beginning of the gospel of Jesus.

The first message of Christ in his earthly ministry

  • Matthew: “The Kingdom of God is near, repent.”
  • Mark: “The Kingdom of God is near, repent and believe the gospel.” (1:15)

16:15 says (conclusion) “Go into all the world and preach the good news to all Creation… Whoever believes will be saved; whoever does not believe will be condemned.”

If we really believe, we are really saved. If we are really saved, we are called to preach the good news (evangelism).

Let’s focus on v. 17-18

“In my name they will drive out demons; they will speak in new tongues; 18 they will pick up snakes with their hands; and when they drink deadly poison, it will not hurt them at all; they will place their hands on sick people, and they will get well.”

This is truth. Jesus always tells the truth, never a lie.

Jesus does not say: “These miracles /wonders will accompany believers.” (these signs)

So, we must understand the word “sign.” It is so familiar to us. What is it? Evidence / truth of something that has happened.

  • If you eat much, your stomach will expand and be filled.
  • If you buy something and pay with cash or card, you will receive a receipt. (sign of purchase)

A sign must be followed as proof / evidence of something that has been done.

“These signs will accompany believers…”

So, let us ask ourselves if these signs have happened in our lives. Let’s read again thoughtfully, prayerfully.

17 And these signs will accompany those who believe: In my name they will drive out demons; they will speak in new tongues; 18 they will pick up snakes with their hands; and when they drink deadly poison, it will not hurt them at all; they will place their hands on sick people, and they will get well.”

So… are these things happening in your life? If you are a true believer, they should happen, right? Are you a true believer? If these signs do not happen in your / my life, then something is terribly wrong.

So, let me make it clear about this passage IN CONTEXT. (Every passage must be read and understood in context.)

In this context, if we believe in Christ, we will be saved – there is no exception. If we are really, really saved and have assurance of salvation, our conclusion is to commit our whole lives to preach the gospel in evangelism.

So, in this context, these signs are signs of evangelism, preaching the good news of salvation.

How many signs? (5)

When you read these verses, you must understand all the time that these are signs of evangelism (preaching the good news).

Signs of Evangelism

Signs of Preaching the Good News of Salvation in Jesus’ Name

If we approach these signs with this understanding, it will be very clear.

“These signs will accompany those who believe [and preach the good news]”

1. Drive out Demons (in Jesus’ name)

Evangelism itself is driving out demons in Jesus’ name. The act of preaching the gospel is in itself driving out demons in Jesus’ name.

On what grounds?

What kinds of humans are on this earth? Man / woman, rich / poor, Asian / African, etc.

Gal 8:23 “There is neither male nor female, you are ONE in Christ…”

So this means that all divisions of humanity are TEMPORARY in this world. Spiritually there are only two kinds of division between humans:

  1. Child of God
  2. Child of Demons

John 8:44 (to those who reject him) “You belong to your father the Devil because you do not accept me.”

If I say this to someone, he will want to fight or kill me. But Jesus said it.

So, what is preaching the good news?

The activity in which we are making Children of the Devil to Children of God. From eternal destruction to eternal life.

So, preaching the good news IS driving out demons in Jesus’ name.

2. Speak in new tongues

Evangelism itself is speaking in a new tongue. Do you speak in a new tongue? (language)

When we pray, we do it with our tongue (language).

At first, there was only one tongue in the whole world. Genesis 11 “The whole world had one tongue, one language, one common tongue and they tried to build a tower to reach God with their own merit and power. So God confused their tongues.” (Tower of Babel).

Now, we have many: English, Korean, Japanese, Chinese, Tagalog, etc

At the Ascension of Christ, the early church prayed and prayed and prayed, and on the day of Pentecost, the Holy Spirit came upon them and their hearts burned with holy fire. So they came out (fire) and preached the gospel.

Many people came from other countries and they heard the gospel in their own native language.

In the physical world, there are several thousand tongues, but in the spiritual world, there are 3.

  1. Devil’s tongue
  2. Old tongue
  3. New tongue

“…they shall speak in new tongues…”

When I speak Korean, I may speak in any of the three, devil’s tongue, old / new tongue.

You can know what kind of tongue you are speaking in.

  1. Devil’s tongue: LIE (doesn’t matter the language) – if you speak a lie, this is spiritually the Devil’s tongue “The devil is a liar and when he lies, he speaks his native language. The devil is the creator of lies.”
  2. Old tongue (earthly language) – speaking about the physical / material world – no matter how wonderful and beautiful, before salvation from Christ, this is the Old tongue
  3. New tongue – speech about heavenly things, truth, mysteries about heaven, the will of God

What is the will of wills of God? For all humanity to be saved. The work of the Holy Spirit + evangelism is to make people believers in Christ.

So, evangelism itself, the sermon, encouraging each other in faith – this is the New Tongue.

In Christ, our identity is a New Creation, with a New Covenant, keeping New Commands, speaking a New Tongue, for a New Heaven and New Earth.

3. Pick up snakes (by hand)

Have you ever done that?

If you are a true believer, you should do that, right?

Should we go to the mountain this afternoon and pick up snakes?

Genesis 3: Satan = the snake – and he lied.

To the woman Eve, “You can eat the fruit, and you will never die. You will be like God.”

You know, all animals were created NOT to speak. Only humans were created to speak. But that snake spoke. What does that mean? It is not a real snake – it was a hidden identity controlling that snake.

LONG time later, the Word of God reveals the identity of that snake.

Rev 12:9 “The Great Dragon was hurled down; the Ancient Snake, who is called the Devil / Satan who leads the whole world astray.” 20:2

Snake = Satan

Luke 10 – Jesus sent 72 evangelists to preach the good news and when they returned, they reported back with great joy. “Lord! Even the demons obey us in your name.” “Yes, I saw Satan fall from heaven and I have given you authority to trample snakes and scorpions, and nothing will harm you.”

So this means: Destroying the power of Satan

This world is still under control of the Devil and so our lives are constant spiritual warfare. The stronghold of Satan will be destroyed and the Kingdom of God will be built in the end.

This is the sign of “picking up snakes”

4. Ingested deadly poison will not harm

BUT, do NOT drink poison – this is testing the Lord and the Bible says, “Do not put the Lord to the test.”

Yes, our lives are under complete control of our Lord Jesus Christ – yet when we are preaching the gospel, we are VERY protected.

Human beings are so easily hurt – do you agree? Have you ever been hurt? I’m so easily hurt (by my wife – she is too close to me).

Husband / wife, children, co-workers, we are so easily dismayed and depressed. More than the animals and the mountains. We are so easily hurt.

BUT, this is the secret (if you agree, you will be so blessed in your future life): The best way to NOT be hurt in this life is to serve others, preach the good news to others.

Stephen is a good example: He was the first martyr in the NT. He drank deadly poison but was not hurt. He did nothing wrong against them, but they were so angry with him, furious with him, and they gnashed their teeth, yelling, and stoned him to death.

If you were in the place of Stephen, how would you react to them?

In this terrible situation, spiritually, he was drinking such deadly poison, but he was not hurt: he did not hate them, he did not curse them, he prayed for them, “Lord, do not hold this sin against them.” He was just like Christ on the cross who prayed for those who crucified him.

His face was shining like an angel and he was standing with the angels at the throne of God.

He was never hurt by drinking this deadly poison.

What made it possible? Was it his own character / patience / morality / self-control / self-training? No, that is the power of Christ, the power of evangelism.

At that moment, he was filled with the Holy Spirit and preaching the good news of the gospel to them.

Jesus is the same yesterday, today, and forever and if you preach the good news, nothing can hurt you.

Matthew “Do not fear the one who can kill your body but not your soul; fear rather the one who can kill both body and soul in hell.”

5. Heal the sick (place hands on them)

This can be applied literally as well. Pray for sick people around you because the answer is God’s job. Do not be afraid of the result. Praying is our job, the result is God’s job.

Rev “He will wipe every tear from your eyes.”

Is there a tear in your eyes? At the final day, Jesus promises to remove all tears from your eyes. If there is a tear in your eyes, we will stand before Christ and he will wipe the tears from our eyes one by one. If there is no tear in your eye, no problem – but were you really never hurt in this world?

There will be no more disease, no more sickness, no more crying, no more problems, no more tears, no more danger of coronavirus, no more aging, no more death. This is perfect.

Evangelism is offering this perfect, eternal wellness (well-being) to others.

Do you want eternal wellness?

“They will place their hands on sick people and they will get well.”

Perfect wellness is available in heaven. Evangelism is offering this perfect wellness to others.

These are the signs of evangelism.

  • No preaching, no signs.
  • Preaching = signs.

I will show you this is true, and how right / truthful I will show you here.

v. 20

“Then the disciples went out and preached everywhere, and the Lord worked with them and confirmed his word by the signs that accompanied it.”

In the previous verse, where is Jesus? In heaven already. In v. 20, he worked WITH them.

This sign is the work of Christ, it is not our own.

  • No preaching, no signs.
  • How long have you been a Christian? 5 years, 10 years, 20? Remember, no preaching, no signs.
  • But if you became a Christian yesterday, remember, preaching = signs.

Please, continue to preach the good news of salvation in YOUR place, and I will continue in my place. And someday again let us meet again as fellow workers and family members.

God bless you.

God bless AICF.

Let’s pray.

Saving Faith leads to “God sent” Faith

Romans 10:13-21 (Pastor Heo)

13 for, “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.” 14 How, then, can they call on the one they have not believed in? And how can they believe in the one of whom they have not heard? And how can they hear without someone preaching to them? 15 And how can anyone preach unless they are sent? As it is written: “How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news!” 16 But not all the Israelites accepted the good news. For Isaiah says, “Lord, who has believed our message?” 17 Consequently, faith comes from hearing the message, and the message is heard through the word about Christ. 18 But I ask: Did they not hear? Of course they did: “Their voice has gone out into all the earth, their words to the ends of the world.” 19 Again I ask: Did Israel not understand? First, Moses says, “I will make you envious by those who are not a nation; I will make you angry by a nation that has no understanding.” 20 And Isaiah boldly says, “I was found by those who did not seek me; I revealed myself to those who did not ask for me.” 21 But concerning Israel he says, “All day long I have held out my hands to a disobedient and obstinate people.”

Salvation is easy, simple, free, open, available – but there is a cost. It is not cheap.

Why is salvation FREE, yet so expensive? It’s actually too expensive to pay – it’s priceless. The price for our salvation that God paid = the life of his One and Only Son, Jesus.

Imagine, if you have only one child – son or daughter. For what in this world could you put your only child in the place of death? Nothing. Yet, our Father God put his only child – Jesus – in our place to die on the cross for our sins. And Jesus says, “salvation is like a treasure found in a field, and when a man found it – he sold ALL he had and bought that field.” Or also, “like a merchant looking for a good purse, and when he found one of great value, he sold everything he had and bought that purse.”

This Bible is the same book –

  • yet in one place, it says, “salvation is FREE – you pay nothing for it.”
  • yet, in another place it says, “You must pay ALL you have for salvation.”

So, how can we combine these two seemingly contradictory verses?

  • Free vs. Expensive.
  • Nothing vs. Everything.

I hope we are very clear in this matter – don’t be confused. Yes, salvation is FREE – God paid the price for us already through Jesus on the cross. We have nothing to pay, buy, to receive salvation.

But the Christian life in this world is a holy journey, a pilgrimage – to know, more and more, the true value of salvation.

Which is more valuable? Salvation or ALL your possessions? The Christian life is “the more we understand the value of salvation, the more we want to give and dedicate ourselves to Christ who died on the cross for our sins.”

Yes, I’m convinced I’m saved by the blood of Christ, yet everyday – though I read the Bible and pray everyday, I can’t say I fully know the true value of salvation. But, the more we know, the more we want to dedicate ourselves to it.

v. 13-15

“13 for, “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.” 14 How, then, can they call on the one they have not believed in? And how can they believe in the one of whom they have not heard? And how can they hear without someone preaching to them? 15 And how can anyone preach unless they are sent? As it is written: “How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news!” “

This “good news” is good news of peace and salvation (Isaiah 52:7).

Yes, we are saved and justified only by believing in Christ and confessing with our mouths before men. We retain righteousness through no work, no power, not our own honor, etc.

Many people want to be recognized as “righteous” because they give, serve, read, study MORE. No, no, this is only self-righteousness. Rather, we receive faith, Christ-righteousness only by believing in Christ.

In these verses we see the word “how” repeated 5x.

v. 13 “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.”

  1. How can they call if they don’t believe?
  2. How can they believe if they don’t hear?
  3. How can they hear without someone preaching?
  4. How can someone preach without being sent?
  5. How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news!

Topic today: Saving Faith leads to “God Sent” Faith

If you have saving faith, you are to have “God sent” faith. God sent his Son to this world. And in his intercessory prayer, Jesus repeats two times, “Father, as you sent me, I’m sending them.” At his resurrection, “Peace be with you as the Father sent me.”

Story of Joseph

You are familiar with his story. He was hated by his 10 older brothers because of his dream.

Also Christ was hated by his people, the Jews, for nothing.

One day, his brothers sold Joseph to slave traders from Egypt. Joseph had so many hardships and injustices – even in prison. Yet, through God’s provision and providence, Joseph became the Prime Minister of Egypt (second most powerful man in the most powerful country on earth at that time) – at the age of 30. Can you do this on your own power? No, impossible.

There were 7 years of abundance – so Joseph had the people save enough food for the following 7 years of famine (even neighboring countries suffered). Even Joseph’s father Jacob suffered, so he sent the 10 brothers to Egypt to buy food. And who did they stand before? Their brother Joseph. He recognized them, but they did not recognize him.

The first deal was done, but later they came a second time – and then he revealed himself to them. Can you imagine this? “I’m Joseph! Your brother! The one you sold into slavery!” Imagine, they must have been so fearful. But Joseph said, “Do not fear, do not be distressed. You sold me, but God sent me – to save many lives.” This is the Christian life.

  • Yes, they SOLD Joseph. This is his earthly life story.
  • Yet, his interpretation of this fact was opposite.
  • “God SENT me.” This is his heavenly life story.

Are you Christian? Then you are writing two stories at the same time. You are writing your heavenly life story THROUGH you earthly life story.

  • If we ask, “Why are you here, in Korea, in Jeonju, in AICF?”
  • We can answer, “I got married here / I’m studying here / I’m working here / etc.”

Yes, this is true, but this is our earthly life story. Our heavenly life story is, “Through this earthly life story, I’m here because God SENT me.”

We are living invisible life through visible life, spiritual life through physical life. Only our earthly life is meaningful when it is connected to our heavenly life. Our earthly life is meaningless, vanity, unless it’s connected to the heavenly story.

  • “You sold me, but God SENT me.”
  • “I’m here because God SENT me.”
  • This is the Christian’s heavenly life story.

v. 16-17

“16 But not all the Israelites accepted the good news. For Isaiah says, “Lord, who has believed our message?” 17 Consequently, faith comes from hearing the message, and the message is heard through the word about Christ.”

Even in the OT, they had heard the good news, but few received it. (quoted from Isaiah 53:1). This is the gospel of the OT. Chp 53 is the “Suffering Messiah” chapter.

Isaiah 53:1-8
“1 Who has believed our message and to whom has the arm of the LORD been revealed? 2 He grew up before him like a tender shoot, and like a root out of dry ground. He had no beauty or majesty to attract us to him, nothing in his appearance that we should desire him. 3 He was despised and rejected by mankind, a man of suffering, and familiar with pain. Like one from whom people hide their faces he was despised, and we held him in low esteem. 4 Surely he took up our pain and bore our suffering, yet we considered him punished by God, stricken by him, and afflicted. 5 But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was on him, and by his wounds we are healed. 6 We all, like sheep, have gone astray, each of us has turned to our own way; and the LORD has laid on him the iniquity of us all. 7 He was oppressed and afflicted, yet he did not open his mouth; he was led like a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before its shearers is silent, so he did not open his mouth. 8 By oppression and judgment he was taken away. Yet who of his generation protested? For he was cut off from the land of the living; for the transgression of my people he was punished. “

  • “by his wounds we are healed”
  • “he did not open his mouth”
  • “he was led by God”
  • John the Baptist called him the “Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world”

These are all fulfilled in the NT

Summary of the fulfillment of these things:

1 Peter 2:21-24
“21 To this you were called, because Christ suffered for you, leaving you an example, that you should follow in his steps. 22 “He committed no sin, and no deceit was found in his mouth.” 23 When they hurled their insults at him, he did not retaliate; when he suffered, he made no threats. Instead, he entrusted himself to him who judges justly. 24 “He himself bore our sins” in his body on the cross, so that we might die to sins and live for righteousness; “by his wounds you have been healed.” “

Let us come back to Romans 10:17 (key verse)

“17 Consequently, faith comes from hearing the message, and the message is heard through the word about Christ. “

  • “Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly.”
  • “Let us fix our eyes on Christ, the author and perfector of our faith.”

Within 10 min I will summarize the WHOLE story of the Bible. Please, pray for me. Genesis to Revelation – focusing on THIS verse (Romans 10:17 “Faith comes from hearing”)

There are 12 main characters in the Bible:
But the key mission / ministry is the same:
“To bear witness to Jesus Christ, the author and perfector of our faith.”

Ready? Ok, go!

12 main characters have the same mission: “to testify about Christ.”

Yes, there are many jobs in this world, but we must be clear about our #1 job. (This is the conclusion – in advance.)

#1 Bible (first character) –

It says many things about life, society, politics, music, family, etc, but the key mission is to testify about Christ

  • John 20:31 “The Bible is written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ and that you may have life in his name.”
  • Jesus says, “You diligently study the Scriptures because you think that by them, you have life, but these are the Scriptures that testify about me.”

#2 Father God

His main ministry is to testify about his son

  • When Jesus was baptized, heaven opened and he said, “This is my Son with whom I am well pleased.”
  • On the Mount of Transfiguration, Jesus was with Moses and Abraham and after they left, heaven opened and God spoke, “This is my Son, in whom I’m well pleased. Listen to him.”
  • Jesus also says, “My Father who sent me into this world testifies about me. To see me is to see him.”

#3 Holy Spirit

The key mission is to witness about Christ.

  • “Nobody can call Jesus ‘Lord’ except by the power of the Holy Spirit.” Can you do this? Then you are doing so with the HS power.
  • John 15:26 “When the Counselor comes, whom I’ll send to you from the Father, the HS will testify about me.”

#4 Abraham

He had many jobs, but Jesus says, “Your father Abraham rejoiced at the thought of seeing my day. He saw it and was glad.” (John)

  • Jesus says, “Before Abraham was, I AM.”

#5 Moses

The first 5 books of the OT are the books of the Law – written by Moses. Even Moses’ key mission is to testify about Christ.

John – Jesus says, “If you believe Moses, you would believe in me because Moses wrote / testified about me.” Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, Deuteronomy are written about Jesus – to show, bear witness, testify about Christ.

#6 David

He is the greatest king in Israel’s history. He is a symbol of Christ. That’s why Jesus came through the family line of David.

  • Matthew 1:1 “The book of the genealogy of Abraham, David, and Jesus.”
  • Psalm 110:1 “1 The LORD says to my lord:“Sit at my right hand until I make your enemies a footstool for your feet.””
    • Lord is repeated twice – but the letters are different.
    • The first LORD is all capital, the second, all lowercase. What is the difference?
      1. Father God is the first – but at that time, they were afraid to call the personal name of God “Jehovah Jireh”
      2. Messiah is the second

That’s why this is repeated in Matt 22:33-34.

  • Jesus quotes this verse and asks, “What do you think about Christ?”
  • They answered, “Son of David” Jesus said, “If so, how does David call Christ ‘Lord’?”

This means that even the key mission of David was to testify about Christ.

#7 All prophets

From Isaiah to Malachi – ALL prophets’ key mission was to testify about Christ.

Acts 10:43 “All prophets in the OT testify about Jesus Christ that everyone who believes in him receives the forgiveness of sins through his name.”

This is the end of the summary of the OT.

#8 (NT) John the Baptist

His key mission was very important because he was a forerunner for Christ. He pointed at Christ and proclaimed, “Behold the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world! He must become greater and I lesser.”

John 1:4 “In him was life and this life was the light of man. It has shone in the darkness, but the darkness has not understood it. A man came, sent from God, his name was John. He came as a witness to testify about Christ – that all men might believe in him.”

#9 All apostles (representative: Peter)

Acts 3:15 “You killed the author of life, but God raised him from the dead. We are the witnesses of this.”

After his resurrection, before ascension, Christ said, “You are my witnesses.”

#10 Paul

There is no doubt about Paul as a witness of Christ. 1 Cor 2:4 “I resolved to know NOTHING except Christ and him crucified. I have nothing to boast of except the cross of Christ through which the world has been crucified to me and I to the world. If I live, I live for Christ, if I die, I die for Christ – so to die is GAIN.”

#11 The Church

No question – the church is the body of Christ.

The church is not a building, it is the PEOPLE of God who confess Christ, “You are Christ, the Son of God.” We are a holy gathering of God’s people who proclaim the same.

  • Jesus says, “On this confession, I will build my church. The gates of hell will never overcome this church. I give the keys of heaven to the church. Whatever is bound by the church will be bound in hell, whatever is loosed by the church will be loosed in heaven.”

This church is in the world, but the world must not be in the church.

#12 YOU (Holy-spirit filled believers)

Your key mission (“be filled with the HS” Eph 5:18 “be wise, do not follow the pattern of this world – be filled with the HS” – check yourselves)

You can check yourself to see if you are pregnant or not. Like this, you can check if you are filled with the HS or not.

  • If you #1 job is to testify about Christ – then you are definitely filled with the HS.
  • But, if it’s not priority #1, you need to be filled with the HS.

Acts 1:8 “When the HS comes upon you, you will receive power and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and Judea, and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”

This is evidence of being filled with the HS.

Let’s pray.

Immanuel (Christmas 2014)

Matthew 1:23, 28:18-20 (Pastor Heo)

23 “The virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel”–which means, “God with us.”

18 Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”

The key message of Christmas is “God With Us”. How is this possible? By nature, we have no right/authority for God to be with us.

  • God is spirit, we are physical.
  • God is Creator, we are his Creations.
  • God is in heaven and heavenly, we are on the earth and earthly.
  • God is absolutely pure and holy, all human beings are totally unclean and sinful.
  • By nature, God is unreachable, unapproachable. Then how is it possible that God is with us, among us, and IN us?

That became possible by the Christmas story, by Jesus coming into the world as a FULL man, as a person.

John 1:14 “God became man and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory. The glory of his one and only Son.”

  • Q: Do you recognize, enjoy, experience that God is with you wherever you are and whatever you do?
  • Q: If “yes”, how much does this fact affect you and your daily life?

In the Bible, the word Immanuel has different meanings – there are 5 levels in the Bible.

Let me share with you these 5 kinds of Immanuel in the Bible.

#1: Level 1 – one-dimensional Immanuel (“God with us”) – applied to ALL Creation.

God is with ALL things – living and unliving, all his things and Creations, he is “with” them.

God is with men, bad men, women, trees, stars, the sun, moon, birds, mountains, fish, everything, everywhere, God is “with” those BECAUSE God is Creator, Sustainer, Ruler, Governor over all things.

  • Eph 4:6 “There is only One God, the Father of all who is above all, and in all, and through all.”
  • Heb 1:3 “The Son, Jesus, is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of God’s being, and is sustaining ALL things with his powerful Word.”

#2: Level 2 – two-dimensional Immanuel

Applied to only human beings – ALL human beings. Yes, God is with ALL human beings, believers and non-, good and bad, the saved, the lost, ALL men.

There’s no place we can be hidden from God. We cannot flee from the presence of God.

Unbelievers do not know/recognize God’s being “with” them BUT regardless of their ignorance that God is with them, he IS with them.

“God causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good and sends rain and snow on the righteous and unrighteous – and causes money and blessings to come to the believers and unbelievers alike.” (Proverbs?)

This unlimited favor to ALL human beings = “General Grace”

#3: Level 3 – three-dimensional Immanuel

Applied only to believers – those who believe in Jesus Christ as their personal Savior, Lord, and God.

This Immanuel guarantees no penalty for sin, and guarantees special freedom in Truth. And absolute heavenly peace and joy and intimate relationship and fellowship with God and the right to pray (directly to him) anytime, everytime. We have access to God with confidence and assurance to get help in our time of need.

  • Jesus says, “I give you eternal life. You shall never perish. No one can snatch you out of my hand.” (John’s gospel)
  • Jesus says, “My Father who has given you to me is greater than ALL so that no one can snatch you out of my hand.”
  • Immanuel God promised, “I will NEVER leave you, nor forsake you.” This promise given only to believers is called “Special Grace.”

#4: Level 4 – four-dimensional Immanuel

The BEST/highest Immanuel that we, true Christians can experience in this world.

This Immanuel is applied to only evangelists, preachers of the gospel – to make disciples of ALL nations.

Matthew 28:18-20 = The “Great Commission” for world salvation and evanglization.

“All authority on heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore, go, baptizing all men in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them all that I have commanded you, and surely I am with you always until the very end of the age.”

“…to the very end of the age.” = There is a limitation in time – ONLY until the end of this “age.”

It means, this kind of Immanuel is applied ONLY in this “age” and it means that this Immanuel will be no more after the end of this age.

This kind of Immanuel is applied only (1) in this age, (2) to true believers who (3) go and preach the Word to all nations.

Q: What is the effect of this 4-dimensional Immanuel? This is where the power and authority of Jesus Christ is revealed through the people who preach the gospel of Jesus Christ.

Example: Moses:

  • God called Moses and said, “Go to Pharaoh and save my people out of Egypt.” This means (today) “Go and make disciples of all nations.”
  • God gave him a promise – the best promise he could give him that “I will be WITH you always.”

This promise was a 4-dimensional Immanuel promise. This means, Moses became LIKE God before Pharaoh, before the people, before his brother Aaron.

Moses performed 10 miracles before Pharaoh. After coming out of Egypt, in front of the Red Sea, Moses raised his staff and stretched out his hand and the Red Sea was divided and they crossed by walking on foot.

Later, Moses made drinking water out of the rock. Moses performed many miracles. God’s promise “I will be WITH you” meant “my power will be done/manifested through you as long as you DO the mission I gave you.”

Today, in our time, this is the same.

Jesus says, “All authority is mine… Therefore, GO, and make disciples of all nations… Surely I am always WITH you to the very end of the age.”

This means, whenever you “go and make disciples” Jesus authority will be manifested through YOU who preach the gospel of salvation.

#5: Level 5 – five-dimensional Immanuel

Applied in the LITERAL heaven – in the world to come after this world. This means the redemption of our bodies. We will be LIKE Jesus – seeing him face-to-face – in heaven forever and ever.

At that time, we will receive spiritual, heavenly, immortal, glorious, radiant, REAL, recognizable as the SAME person – bodies.

1 Thess 16:17 “The Lord (Jesus) will come back again from heaven with a loud command with the voice of the archangel and the trumpet call of God, and then the dead in Christ will be raised first. And we who are alive in Christ will be caught up in the air to receive him in the air, and we will be caught up to heaven and be with him forever and ever.”

May God bless all of us with Immanuel God.

“God be WITH us.”

Remember and enjoy abundantly this last sentence: God is WITH you IN Christ Jesus who was

  1. born for us,
  2. died for us,
  3. was raised for us, and
  4. will come back for us, and
  5. live with us forever and ever Amen.

Let’s pray.
