God is the hardest worker
1 Now the LORD was gracious to Sarah as he had said, and the LORD did for Sarah what he had promised. 2 Sarah became pregnant and bore a son to Abraham in his old age, at the very time God had promised him.

0. Introduction
Let’s all take a look back over our last week.
Do you do your best all week?
Some people will say that they did, and others did not.
In any case, everyone has a desire to live a life faithful to their highest ideals and aspirations.
We all want to live and work with passion and feel rewarded for what we have achieved.
But who do you suppose is the hardest working living person in the world today?
There may be various opinions, but let me introduce one of the very hardest of the hard workers.
Jonny Kim is an American-born high achiever in his mid-thirties whose parents immigrated from South Korea to the US before he was born.
His brilliant career proves that he has achieved much more than most people ever even dream of.
Currently, he works as a NASA astronaut, although he was previously a Navy Seal Special Forces sniper, and also received his Doctor of Medicine from Harvard Medical School in 2017.
From joining the military in the early 2000s, to his medical degree in 2017, to training with 17 other NASA astronauts for a 2024 moon landing, his career is widely varied, and all three jobs are seemingly unrelated. But Kim has become a perfect expert in each area.
In fact, due to the excellence of his outstanding achievements, there is an ongoing joke in the United States that he may soon become the President. Republican Representative Ted Cruz, who attended the NASA training graduation ceremony, admitted that he felt “horribly, horribly inadequate” around Kim. “What the heck have we been doing with our lives?” he asked a colleague. “[He’s] a Navy SEAL, with a degree to Harvard Medical School. That’s just ridiculous. I mean, he can kill you and bring you back to life — and do it all in space.”
Although Jonny Kim’s childhood was once shadowed by domestic abuse from his father, he was raised by his mother to have good values. Speaking of his upbringing, he said, “Even if you were born under a bad star, you still have the option and the power to pioneer your destiny. If you ask me what I can do for humanity, I want to contribute to making tomorrow better than today.”
Wow! Seriously, what an amazing example of a human life. But that’s as far as we’ll go with the story of Jonny Kim for today. In fact, there is someone who works much harder than Jonny Kim, and he will be the focus of our message today.
“God is the hardest worker” is our message title today, and it is taken out of Genesis chapter 21.
Why do I say God is the hardest worker? This is because he IS the problem solver for all problems for all people for all time.
1. For Sarah
Genesis 21:6-7
6 Sarah said, “God has brought me laughter, and everyone who hears about this will laugh with me.” 7 And she added, “Who would have said to Abraham that Sarah would nurse children? Yet I have borne him a son in his old age.”
This is how God solved Sarah’s problem.
Remember when Sarah was ignored by her maidservant Hagar because she couldn’t get pregnant? Having a son was very important to Sarah’s honour.
But God waited to deliver the son he promised her until Sarah was completely obedient.
At long last, God fulfilled her hope and gave her ‘Isaac’ after her faith had grown enough.
Abraham and Sarah obeyed the Word of God and left their homeland to move to the land of Canaan. By granting them the child of promise, and restored Sarah’s honor, and began building Abraham’s family into a great nation.
The name ‘Isaac’ means ‘laughter’, both that ‘she laughs’ and the ‘people laugh’.
Amazingly, God made both Sarah and the people around her happy.
This is what God did for Sarah.
2. For Hagar
Genesis 21:17-18
17 God heard the boy crying, and the angel of God called to Hagar from heaven and said to her, “What is the matter, Hagar? Do not be afraid; God has heard the boy crying as he lies there. 18 Lift the boy up and take him by the hand, for I will make him into a great nation.”
This is how God solved Hagar’s problem.
Sarah became happy because of Isaac, the son of the promise. But she still had one more problem. Ishmael, who was Isaac’s older half-brother, the son of Hagar, her maidservant, mocked young Isaac.
Sarah thought Ismael threatened Isaac’s place as Abraham’s heir and asked Abraham to send Hagar and her son out of his house. This request of Sarah became a big problem for Hagar.
Hagar could not be economically independent on her own, yet she was kicked out of Abraham’s house and could do nothing about it. Besides this, she had to take care of her young son in the wilderness. When her water was depleted, Hagar cried out loud because she could not bear to watch her son die.
God felt sorry for the young Ishmael who was crying, so he gave his mother Hagar the wisdom and courage to find water. He then sent her back to continue to live in Abrahams’ household.
Hagar overcame the difficult situation with the help of God and raised her son well.
Hagar also introduced a partner to Ishmael in her hometown of Egypt.
Ishmael was able to grow well because God cared for him and accompanied him.
This was what God did for Hagar.
3. For Abraham
Genesis 21:22-23
22 At that time Abimelech and Phicol the commander of his forces said to Abraham, “God is with you in everything you do. 23 Now swear to me here before God that you will not deal falsely with me or my children or my descendants. Show to me and the country where you are living as an alien the same kindness I have shown to you.”
This is how God solved Abraham’s problem.
Abimelech knew that Abraham had been blessed by God, so he wanted to form an alliance with him. However, Abraham had a problem with Abimelech. An incident arose in Canaan where Abraham was living in which Abimelech’s servants seized Abraham’s well of water.
But, God gave Abraham the wisdom to solve this problem.
Abraham gave Abimelech seven ewe lambs as evidence that he had dug the well of water that Abimelech’s servant had seized from him. Abimelech did not know the well was Abraham’s and apologized to Abraham, and thereafter, they made a covenant for peace.
In this way, Abraham, who needed a place to live, acquired the basis for living in the land of the Philistines. There, he planted a tamarisk tree in Beersheba, and he called upon the name of the LORD (Genesis 21:33).
This was what God did for Abraham.
4. For us (Jesus Christ)
Hebrews 7:24-25
24 but because Jesus lives forever, he has a permanent priesthood. 25 Therefore he is able to save completely those who come to God through him, because he always lives to intercede for them.
And this is how God has solved our greatest problems for us.
He sent his son, Jesus Christ, to take our sin and shame, the burden of guilt, and the sentence of death we all bear as the consequence of the sin we all have inherited from our first parents Adam and Eve.
Jesus has conveyed the love of God to all mankind by sacrificing his own life for ours and granting us eternal life through his sacrifice. He is the only mediator between God and man and delivers all our prayers directly to God. Even now, he is seated at the right hand of God in heaven, and is always interceding for us and always working on our behalf.
We were surprised to hear about Jonny Kim’s great career because through his effort, he was able to join the ranks of the best soldiers, the best doctors, and the best astronauts in the world.
Isn’t it incredible that he was able to achieve THREE amazing careers when most people can’t even reach one of those?
But what Jesus did for us should be much more surprising and magnificent to us than what Jonny Kim did because what Christ has accomplished is infinitely infinite, beyond imagination, beyond words.
Jesus is a better soldier. He has bested every foe, defeated every enemy, and won every battle against evil.
Jesus is a better doctor. He has healed our greatest sickness, sin itself, which leads all people to death, and beyond the miracles we read about in the Bible, he still continues to heal people today of various illnesses!
Jesus is a better astronaut. He did not ascend into space as our representative to God, but descended from heaven to earth as God’s representative to us. His human body, born as a baby to the virgin Mary, was the best physical manifestation of God’s spirit to humanity, and the best representation of his love to all mankind.
Jesus is my eternal savior who saved my life and yours.
This was what God did for us.

우리의 지난 한주의 삶을 돌아봅시다.
당신은 열심히 살았나요?
열심히 살았다고 말하는 사람도 있을 것이고, 그렇지 않다고 말하는 사람도 있을 것입니다.
어찌되었든 사람들은 누구나 인생을 충실하게 살고 싶은 소망이 있습니다.
매 시간마다 생동감 있게 일하며, 성취한 일들에 대해 보람을 느끼면서 살고 싶을 것입니다.
그렇다면 세계에서 가장 열심히 일하는 사람은 누굴까요?
다양한 의견들이 있겠지만, 정말 열심히 일하는 한 사람을 소개합니다.
올 라운드(All around person)인 그의 이름은 조니 킴(Jonny Kim)입니다.
그의 화려한 경력은 그가 열심히 살았다는 것을 증명합니다.
그는 현재 나사(NASA) 소속의 우주 비행사입니다.
그는 전에 네이비씰(Navy Seal) 특수부대 저격수였습니다.
그는 또한 전에 하버드대 의대를 졸업하여 내과 의사로 활동한 경력이 있습니다.
이 세 가지 직업들은 서로 연관성이 없었습니다. 그러나 그는 완벽하게 전문가가 되었습니다.
그의 뛰어난 이력 때문에 미국 내에선 농담으로 그가 곧 대통령이 될 거라는 반응도 있습니다.

조니 킴은 한국계 미국인입니다.
그는 이민 2세로 암울한 학창 시절을 보냈습니다.
그러나 그는 좋은 가치관을 가지고 있었습니다.
다음은 그가 했던 말들 중 일부 입니다.
“나쁜 카드를 가지고 태어날 수 있지만 당신에겐 운명을 개척할 수 있는 선택권과 힘이 있다.”
“가진 것 없이 태어나도 다음 세대에 공헌할 수 있다는 것을 보여주고 싶다. 인류를 위해 무엇을 할 수 있겠냐고 묻는다면, 오늘보다 나은 내일을 만드는데 기여하고 싶다.”
그런데 오늘 저는 조니 킴을 소개하려고 하는 것이 아닙니다.
저는 여러분에게 조니 킴 보다 훨씬 더 열심히 일하는 분을 소개하려고 합니다.
그 분은 바로 하나님입니다.
오늘은 <열심히 일하시는 하나님>이라는 제목으로 창세기 21장 말씀을 나누겠습니다.
하나님은 각 사람에게 일어난 문제들을 해결하시는 해결사가 되셨습니다.
1. 사라에게
창세기 21:6-7
6 사라가 이르되 하나님이 나를 웃게 하시니 듣는 자가 다 나와 함께 웃으리로다 7 또 이르되 사라가 자식들을 젖먹이겠다고 누가 아브라함에게 말하였으리요마는 아브라함의 노경에 내가 아들을 낳았도다 하니라
하나님은 사라의 문제를 해결하셨습니다.
사라가 임신을 하지 못해 그녀의 여종 하갈에게 무시를 당했던 일을 떠올려 보십시요.
사라에게 아들을 갖는 것은 그녀의 명예와 관련된 아주 중요한 일이었습니다.
하나님은 사라가 완전히 순종할 때까지 기다려야 하셨습니다.
하나님은 사라의 믿음이 성장하였을 때 그녀의 오랜 소원을 이루어 주셨습니다.
그 소원은 바로 약속의 아들 ‘이삭’ 이었습니다.
아브라함과 사라는 하나님의 말씀에 순종하여 고향 땅을 떠나 가나안 땅으로 이동하였습니다.
하나님은 순종한 그들에게 약속의 아들을 선물해 주셨고, 사라의 명예도 회복시키셨습니다.
‘이삭’이라는 이름의 뜻은 ‘그 여자가 웃는다’, ‘사람들이 웃는다’는 뜻입니다.
하나님의 놀라운 일은 사라와 사라의 주변 사람들을 행복하게 만들었습니다.
이것이 하나님이 사라를 위해 행하신 일이었습니다.
2. 하갈에게
창세기 21:17-18
17 하나님이 그 어린 아이의 소리를 들으셨으므로 하나님의 사자가 하늘에서부터 하갈을 불러 이르시되 하갈아 무슨 일이냐 두려워하지 말라 하나님이 저기 있는 아이의 소리를 들으셨나니 18 일어나 아이를 일으켜 네 손으로 붙들라 그가 큰 민족을 이루게 하리라 하시니라
하나님은 하갈의 문제를 해결하셨습니다.
사라는 약속의 아들 이삭 때문에 행복했습니다.
하지만 그녀는 한 가지 고민이 있었습니다.
그것은 여종 하갈의 아들인 이스마엘이 어린 이삭을 괴롭히는 것이었습니다.
이스마엘이 이삭의 자리를 위협한다고 여긴 사라는 아브라함에게 하갈을 집에서 내보낼 것을 요청합니다.
사라의 요청은 하갈에게 큰 문제가 되어 돌아왔습니다.
경제적으로 자립할 수 없었던 하갈은 아브라함의 집에서 쫓겨나 아무것도 할 수 없었습니다.
게다가 그녀는 거친 광야에서 그녀의 아들을 보살펴야 했습니다.
마지막 마실 물이 떨어지자 하갈은 자신의 아들이 죽는 것을 볼 수 없어 소리 내어 울었습니다.
하나님은 울고 있는 이스마엘을 불쌍히 여기셨습니다.
하나님은 그의 어머니 하갈에게 물을 찾을 수 있는 지혜와 용기를 주셨습니다.
하갈은 어려운 상황을 극복하고 그녀의 아들을 잘 키웠습니다.
또한 하갈은 자신의 고향인 애굽 땅에서 이스마엘에게 아내를 얻어 주었습니다.
이스마엘은 하나님이 동행하여 장성할 수 있었습니다.
이것이 하나님이 하갈을 위해 행하신 일이었습니다.
3. 아브라함에게
창 21:22-23
22 그 때에 아비멜렉과 그 군대 장관 비골이 아브라함에게 말하여 이르되 네가 무슨 일을 하든지 하나님이 너와 함께 계시도다 23 그런즉 너는 나와 내 아들과 내 손자에게 거짓되이 행하지 아니하기를 이제 여기서 하나님을 가리켜 내게 맹세하라 내가 네게 후대한 대로 너도 나와 네가 머무는 이 땅에 행할 것이니라
하나님은 아브라함의 문제를 해결하셨습니다.
아비멜렉은 아브라함이 하나님으로부터 복 받은 사람이라는 것을 알고 있었습니다.
그래서 그는 아브라함과 동맹을 맺기를 원했습니다.
그런데 아브라함은 아비멜렉과 그 전에 해결해야할 문제가 있었습니다.
그것은 아비멜렉의 종들이 아브라함의 우물을 빼앗은 것입니다.
하나님은 아브라함에게 이 문제를 해결할 수 있는 지혜를 주셨습니다.
아브라함은 아비멜렉에게 일곱 암양 새끼를 주어 우물의 증거로 삼았습니다.
아비멜렉은 자신은 그 일에 대해 몰랐다고 아브라함에게 사과하였습니다.
그리고 그들은 평화를 위한 언약을 맺었습니다.
살아갈 터전이 필요했던 아브라함이 블레셋 사람의 땅에서 살아갈 수 있는 근거를 획득한 것입니다.
아브라함은 브엘세바에서 에셀 나무를 심고 거기서 영원하신 여호와의 이름을 불렀습니다.
이것이 하나님이 아브라함을 위해 행하신 일이었습니다.
4. 우리에게 (예수님)
히브리서 7:24-25
24 예수는 영원히 계시므로 그 제사장 직분도 갈리지 아니하느니라 25 그러므로 자기를 힘입어 하나님께 나아가는 자들을 온전히 구원하실 수 있으니 이는 그가 항상 살아 계셔서 그들을 위하여 간구하심이라
하나님은 우리의 문제를 해결하셨습니다.
우리의 문제를 해결하기 위해 우리에게 오신 하나님은 예수 그리스도 입니다.
예수님은 하나님의 사랑을 인류에게 전해주셨습니다.
예수님은 그의 희생으로 인류에게 생명을 주셨습니다.
예수님은 모든 기도가 하나님께 전달되도록 도와주십니다.
예수님은 지금도 우리를 위해서 쉬지 않고 일하고 계십니다.
우리는 조니 킴(Jonny Kim)의 대단한 경력을 듣고 놀랐습니다.
그는 최고의 군인이었고, 최고의 의사였고, 지금은 최고의 우주비행사이기 때문입니다.
그는 보통 사람들이 성취하기 어려운 일들을 세 가지나 달성했기 때문입니다.
하지만 우리 예수님이 하신 일은 더욱 놀랍습니다.
그가 하는 일은 우리가 셀 수 없을 정도로 무한합니다.
그는 모든 악에서 승리한 최고의 용사였습니다.
그는 모든 병을 고친 최고의 의사였습니다.
그는 모든 사람들에게 하나님의 사랑을 전한 최고의 메신져 였습니다.
그는 나의 생명을 구한 영원한 나의 구원자입니다.
이것이 하나님이 우리를 위해 행하신 일이었습니다.
