God rewards you
1 Jacob heard that Laban`s sons were saying, “Jacob has taken everything our father owned and has gained all this wealth from what belonged to our father.” 2 And Jacob noticed that Laban`s attitude toward him was not what it had been. 3 Then the LORD said to Jacob, “Go back to the land of your fathers and to your relatives, and I will be with you.”
Genesis 31:1-3
Picture yourself in Jacob’s shoes. You’ve lived sincerely and worked diligently for your uncle for decades, growing both his wealth and yours. Yet, your uncle has constantly renegotiated your work contract, always trying to get the upper-hand over you. And now, even his sons, the brothers of your wives, have set their hearts against you. In Jacob’s shoes, by now, you’re probably asking yourself: “Can a sincere person ever get ahead in this life?”
Can a sincere person succeed?
Most people have a desire to do well in their field. And many people advise us to first be sincere and work diligently if we want to succeed.
But the question remains: will a sincere and diligent person truly succeed in life?
The answer is: sometimes.
Throughout history, some of the most sincere people have achieved high performance and great results, but others have utterly failed.
There’s an interesting book about this titled, “You are a bad A” (aka “You are Amazing”) written by Jen Sincero. The subtitle of the book is “How to stop doubting your greatness and live an awesome life.”
The author of this book asserts that sincerity in and of itself is not the problem, but that purposeless, or directionless, sincerity is ruining people. That is, it is important to know WHAT you are working diligently for and WHY. If you know what you’re doing, what you’re going towards, and why, that knowledge in and of itself is success.
So, what are you now working sincerely on? What are you diligently striving for? Your answer will be a key clue about your future.
In fact, as Christians, our first identity, which should be prioritized over our professional identity, is as a Christian. Therefore, we must work diligently and strive sincerely for the glory of God! Because as the sons and daughters of God we are a physical representation of God’s sovereignty and divine purposes on earth, to those around us.
Let’s take another look at: “Jacob’s hard life.”
Jacob’s hard life
Genesis 31:38-42
38 “I have been with you for twenty years now. Your sheep and goats have not miscarried, nor have I eaten rams from your flocks.
39 I did not bring you animals torn by wild beasts; I bore the loss myself. And you demanded payment from me for whatever was stolen by day or night.
40 This was my situation: The heat consumed me in the daytime and the cold at night, and sleep fled from my eyes.
41 It was like this for the twenty years I was in your household. I worked for you fourteen years for your two daughters and six years for your flocks, and you changed my wages ten times.
42 If the God of my father, the God of Abraham and the Fear of Isaac, had not been with me, you would surely have sent me away empty-handed. But God has seen my hardship and the toil of my hands, and last night he rebuked you.”
Jacob was very good at his work, a diligent worker and a sincere man. He would have looked quite capable to the people around him because he always did his best in his work sincerely and enthusiastically.
But Jacob’s life was made more difficult because of his uncle, Laban. Beyond the first betrayal of giving his first daughter, Leah, to Jacob in marriage before Rachel, Laban also exploited Jacob’s labor and did not pay him a fair wage.
We need to realize something about our own lives through Jacob’s situation. Sometimes, even if you do your best at your work, you cannot always live a successful life. Sometimes, even if we do our work faithfully, the result is not always good. And in fact, bad results, even when produced through a diligent and sincere attitude, can lead you into a bad situation where you are reprimanded by your boss.
So then, what should we do in this situation?
And why did Jacob continue to work diligently even in his tough life?
At some point, he would have tried to leave or change his situation. So now, let’s take a look at: Jacob’s escape.
Jacob’s escape
Genesis 31:1-3 ;14-16
1 Jacob heard that Laban`s sons were saying, “Jacob has taken everything our father owned and has gained all this wealth from what belonged to our father.”
2 And Jacob noticed that Laban`s attitude toward him was not what it had been.
3 Then the LORD said to Jacob, “Go back to the land of your fathers and to your relatives, and I will be with you.”
14 Then Rachel and Leah replied, “Do we still have any share in the inheritance of our father`s estate?
15 Does he not regard us as foreigners? Not only has he sold us, but he has used up what was paid for us.
16 Surely all the wealth that God took away from our father belongs to us and our children. So do whatever God has told you.”
Jacob worked diligently for Laban’s business, but his passion and the growth of his personal wealth angered Laban’s sons because they thought Jacob was siphoning off their wealth from their father’s estate.
The more sincerely Jacob worked, the worse his situation got, but then Jacob remembered his vow to God, and he was able to endure the hardship.
After a time, God commanded Jacob to leave Laban and return to his ancestors’ home land. So, Jacob sought the consent of his two wives before his family left. Even though they were Jacob’s wives, they were also Laban’s daughters, so he didn’t want to pull them away from their father’s house without their consent.
The two women accepted Jacob’s proposal with certainty because they realized that their father, Laban, had deprived them of their inheritance. Rachel and Leah now fully supported Jacob’s will over their father’s will.
So, when Jacob noticed that his cousins’ hostility to him was growing, he made the decision to leave for the land of his ancestors, as God had commanded. After all the preparations were complete, Jacob led his family and all their possessions away from Laban’s house and fled for the land of his ancestors.
From his difficult situation in Laban’s house, to his escape, and later prosperity, Jacob surely realized the ultimate truth of life: that it is God who rewards.
God rewards
Genesis 31:24; 48-49
24 Then God came to Laban the Aramean in a dream at night and said to him, “Be careful not to say anything to Jacob, either good or bad.”
48 Laban said, “This heap is a witness between you and me today.” That is why it was called Galeed.
49 It was also called Mizpah, because he said, “May the LORD keep watch between you and me when we are away from each other.
When Jacob was ready to leave Laban, he left with the grace of God, and the full trust of his wives.
He also possessed a generous amount of wealth that would support him as he returned home.
Laban was fiercely angry and pursued Jacob after he had fled. At that time, God appeared in Laban’s dream and commanded him to say nothing to Jacob, neither good nor bad. If God had not appeared to Laban in this way, his fierce anger may have demanded the life of Jacob.
Laban confessed that God had rebuked him, and after hearing this, Jacob brought up Laban’s unjust behavior over the previous 20 years. Then he insisted that Laban pay the right price for Jacob’s hard work.
Knowing Jacob’s sincerity, God sided with Jacob as defender, and rewarded him repayment for all the damages Laban had imposed upon him. Then Jacob and Laban set up a pile of stones as the evidence of a covenant, or contract, between them, with God as a witness.
The covenant between the two men had dual provisions, to set agreed upon limits on the two men and their future relationship with each other.
First, Jacob agreed to not neglect Leah and Rachel. He promised to never marry other women and not reduce the rights of Laban’s daughters.
Second, Laban agreed to creating boundaries between Israel, Jacob’s people and the Arameans, his people.
Each man additionally agreed to release the feelings of resentment and hatred they had toward one another, and from that moment forward, would remain in peace before God.
In the same way, people’s conflicts and problems can be solved when they come together before God.
Jacob worked diligently because he remembered God’s promise and God did not forget this sincerity of Jacob, completely rewarding him in God’s own time.
Many of us are also living as sincerely and diligently as Jacob.
So how can we be rewarded for our sincerity?
The answer is that although our reward may not always be found on this earth or in this life, Jesus Christ ultimately rewards us with eternal life.
The reward of Christ
We may also be living a difficult life like Jacob that is hard to understand.
But our purpose on earth is not to accumulate more and more possessions or wealth, which ultimately will be lost after we die. Rather, our purpose is to represent the glory of Jesus Christ as a Christian.
But, if it is difficult to maintain our livelihood through difficulties and busy-ness, is it still possible for us to represent the glory of Jesus?
Isaiah 53:1-6
1 Who has believed our message and to whom has the arm of the LORD been revealed?
2 He grew up before him like a tender shoot, and like a root out of dry ground. He had no beauty or majesty to attract us to him, nothing in his appearance that we should desire him.
3 He was despised and rejected by men, a man of sorrows, and familiar with suffering. Like one from whom men hide their faces he was despised, and we esteemed him not.
4 Surely he took up our infirmities and carried our sorrows, yet we considered him stricken by God, smitten by him, and afflicted.
5 But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was upon him, and by his wounds we are healed.
6 We all, like sheep, have gone astray, each of us has turned to his own way; and the LORD has laid on him the iniquity of us all.
Jesus did what God commanded, faithfully and to the best of his ability, in order to become our Savior. But Jesus’ reward was insults and suffering from the very people he came to save. Yet, God rewarded Jesus’ sincerity and restored his position and Jesus has become our Christ through his sincerity and sacrifice.
He has become the only savior who can grant us eternal life.
In fact, Jesus’ life was an extreme example of an unreasonable life. The very purpose of his birth was death in order to save our lives. But the purpose of his death was for the will and glory of God. In the end, God gave Jesus victory over death.
Is your life difficult? Is it hard to understand? Then, think of Jesus’ unreasonable life. Think of Jesus’ suffering and death for you. And pray to him, who still loves and accompanies you.
God’s sovereignty is realized only through Jesus.
The realm of God’s sovereignty is not only in the afterlife, but also in this land where we are living now.
A good example of this is how God helped Jacob solve his problems and conflicts with Laban.
So, the most important aspect to accompanying Jesus is to meet Jesus often, of course.
And how can we meet him?
- First, through worship
- Second, through reading bible
- Third, through prayer.
Call Jesus’ name every day!
Go to Jesus every day!
You will surely experience God’s amazing plans and problem solving.
Jesus, who knows you best, will lead you and your life in a wonderful way.

0. 도입 : 성실한 사람이 성공할까?
대부분의 사람들은 자신의 분야에서 뛰어난 성과를 내고 싶어 합니다.
그리고 많은 사람들은 성공하기 위해서 먼저 성실하라고 우리에게 조언합니다.
그렇다면 정말 성실한 사람이 성공할까요?
그 대답은 그럴 수도 아닐 수도 있다는 것입니다.
그 이유는 성실한 사람이 높은 성과를 내기도 하지만 낮은 성과를 내기도 하기 때문입니다.
여기에 이것에 관한 흥미로운 책이 있습니다.
이 책은 젠 신체로가 쓴, “성실함의 배신”입니다.
이 책의 저자는 성실함 그 자체는 문제가 없으나, 목적이 없는 성실함이 당신을 망칠 것이라고 이야기 합니다.
그것은 당신이 무엇을 위해서 성실하게 일해야만 하는가라는 것입니다.
만약 당신이 무엇을 하고 있는지를 알고, 무엇을 향해 가는지를 안다면 그것은 성공이라고 저자는 말합니다.
당신은 무엇을 위해 성실합니까?
당신의 대답은 당신의 미래를 결정하는 중요한 단서가 될 것 입니다.
우리는 반드시 하나님의 영광을 위해서 일해야 합니다.
그 이유는 그리스도인이라는 우리의 첫번째 정체성이, 우리가 가진 고유한 직업 정체성보다 우선하기 때문입니다.
우리가 하나님의 아들과 딸로써 하나님의 주권을 반드시 드러내야 하기 때문입니다.
1. 야곱의 힘든 삶
창세기 31:38-42
38 내가 이 이십 년을 외삼촌과 함께 하였거니와 외삼촌의 암양들이나 암염소들이 낙태하지 아니하였고 또 외삼촌의 양 떼의 숫양을 내가 먹지 아니하였으며
39 물려 찢긴 것은 내가 외삼촌에게로 가져가지 아니하고 낮에 도둑을 맞았든지 밤에 도둑을 맞았든지 외삼촌이 그것을 내 손에서 찾았으므로 내가 스스로 그것을 보충하였으며
40 내가 이와 같이 낮에는 더위와 밤에는 추위를 무릅쓰고 눈 붙일 겨를도 없이 지냈나이다
41 내가 외삼촌의 집에 있는 이 이십 년 동안 외삼촌의 두 딸을 위하여 십사 년, 외삼촌의 양 떼를 위하여 육 년을 외삼촌에게 봉사하였거니와 외삼촌께서 내 품삯을 열 번이나 바꾸셨으며
42 우리 아버지의 하나님, 아브라함의 하나님 곧 이삭이 경외하는 이가 나와 함께 계시지 아니하셨더라면 외삼촌께서 이제 나를 빈손으로 돌려보내셨으리이다마는 하나님이 내 고난과 내 손의 수고를 보시고 어제 밤에 외삼촌을 책망하셨나이다
야곱은 그의 일에 뛰어난 사람이었습니다.
그는 또한 성실하기까지 했습니다.
열심히 일하고 성실하기까지 한 야곱의 삶은 어땠을까요?
주위 사람들이 보기에 야곱은 상당히 능력이 있는 사람으로 보였을 것입니다.
왜냐하면 그는 언제나 그의 일에 성실하며 최선을 다했기 때문입니다.
그러나 사실 야곱은 그의 삼촌 라반으로 인해 힘든 삶을 살고 있었습니다.
그 이유는 라반이 야곱의 노동력을 착취하고 임금을 속였기 때문입니다.
우리는 이러한 야곱의 상황을 통해 한가지 깨달아야 합니다.
그것은 만약 당신이 당신의 일에 최선을 다한다 할지라도, 당신이 언제나 성공적인 삶을 살수는 없다는 것입니다.
이것은 꽤 우리의 현실 같이 보입니다.
만약 우리가 성실하게 우리의 일을 한다고 해도, 그 결과가 항상 좋을 수는 없습니다.
오히려 나쁜 결과는 당신을 당신의 상사로부터 질책을 받는 안좋은 상황으로 인도 할 수도 있습니다.
우리는 이러한 상황에서 무엇을 해야할까요?
왜 야곱은 그의 힘든 삶에서도 성실하게 일했을까요?
2. 야곱의 탈출
창세기 31:1-3 ;14-16
1 야곱이 라반의 아들들이 하는 말을 들은즉 야곱이 우리 아버지의 소유를 다 빼앗고 우리 아버지의 소유로 말미암아 이 모든 재물을 모았다 하는지라
2 야곱이 라반의 안색을 본즉 자기에게 대하여 전과 같지 아니하더라
3 여호와께서 야곱에게 이르시되 네 조상의 땅 네 족속에게로 돌아가라 내가 너와 함께 있으리라 하신지라

15 아버지가 우리를 팔고 우리의 돈을 다 먹어버렸으니 아버지가 우리를 외국인처럼 여기는 것이 아닌가
16 하나님이 우리 아버지에게서 취하여 가신 재물은 우리와 우리 자식의 것이니 이제 하나님이 당신에게 이르신 일을 다 준행하라
야곱은 라반의 기업을 위해 성실하게 일했지만, 이러한 그의 열정과 성장은 라반의 아들들에게 부정적으로 여겼습니다.
그들이 야곱을 자신의 기업을 빼앗고 있다고 생각했기 때문입니다.
야곱이 성실하게 최선을 다하며 일할수록, 그의 상황은 점점 나빠졌습니다.
하지만 야곱은 하나님과의 맹세를 기억하면서 힘든 상황을 견뎌냈습니다.
하나님은 이제 야곱에게 라반을 떠나 그의 조상의 땅으로 돌아가라고 명령하셨습니다.
야곱은 떠나기 전, 두 아내의 동의가 필요했습니다.
그녀들은 야곱의 아내이기 했지만, 라반의 딸들이기도 했기 때문입니다.
이에 두 여인은 야곱의 제안을 확실하게 수용하였습니다.
그들이 아버지 라반이 자신들은 상속권을 박탈했다고 생각했기 때문입니다.
이제 라헬과 레아도 완전한 야곱의 편이 된 것입니다.
야곱은 사촌들의 적개심이 커지고 있다는 사실을 알아차렸습니다.
그러나 떠나야 한다는 결심은 하나님의 명령을 받고 나서야 하게 되었습니다.
모든 준비를 마친 야곱은 그의 가족과 모든 소유를 이끌고 조상의 땅으로 도망쳤습니다.
3. 하나님의 보상하신다
창세기 31:24; 48-49
24 밤에 하나님이 아람 사람 라반에게 현몽하여 이르시되 너는 삼가 야곱에게 선악간에 말하지 말라 하셨더라
48 라반의 말에 오늘 이 무더기가 너와 나 사이에 증거가 된다 하였으므로 그 이름을 갈르엣이라 불렀으며
49 또 미스바라 하였으니 이는 그의 말에 우리가 서로 떠나 있을 때에 여호와께서 나와 너 사이를 살피시옵소서 함이라
야곱은 하나님의 은혜로 라반을 떠날 모든 준비가 갖춰졌습니다.
야곱의 아내들이 전적으로 그를 신뢰하게 되었습니다.
또한 그는 고향으로 돌아가기 위해 필요한 넉넉한 재물도 소유하게 되었습니다.
그러나 라반은 야곱이 자신을 속이고 떠났기 때문에 분노하며 맹렬히 야곱을 추적하였습니다.
이때 하나님은 라반의 꿈에 나타나 야곱에게 좋고 나쁨에 대해 말하지 말 것을 당부하셨습니다.
만약 하나님이 라반에게 말씀하지 않았다면 라반의 맹렬한 분노는 야곱의 생명을 원했을 것입니다.
야곱은 하나님이 라반을 책망하셨다는 사실을 듣고, 지난 20년 동안의 정의롭지 않은 라반의 행실을 언급하였습니다.
야곱은 자신이 힘들게 일한 것에 대한 정당한 대가를 받아야함을 주장하였습니다.
하나님은 보호받지 못하고 힘 없는 사람들을 두둔하시는 분으로 야곱의 편을 들어주셨습니다.
즉 하나님이 야곱의 성실함을 아시고, 그동안 그가 받았던 손해를 라반을 통해 모두다 보상해 주셨습니다.
야곱과 라반은 언약을 맺기 위해 돌무더기를 증거로 삼았습니다.
그들은 이 언약의 증인을 하나님으로 고백하셨습니다.
이 언약의 특징은 이중적인 성격을 가지고 있다는 것입니다.
첫째, 이 언약은 야곱이 레아와 라헬을 박대하지 않으며, 또 다른 여자들과 결혼하여 혼인상 이 둘의 권리를 줄이지 않기로 한 것입니다.
둘째, 이 언약은 이스라엘과 아담 사람들 사이에 경계를 확정하는 국제법상의 언약을 의미하였습니다. 원한과 미움의 감정을 내려놓고, 이 시간 이후로는 하나님 안에서 서로가 평화롭게 지내자는 뜻입니다.
사람들의 갈등과 문제는 그들이 하나님 앞으로 나아올 때에 해결되는 것입니다.
야곱이 성실하게 일했던 목적은 하나님의 약속을 기억했기 때문입니다.
하나님은 이러한 야곱의 성실을 잊지 않으시고, 하나님의 때에 그에게 완벽하게 보상하셨습니다.
우리 또한 야곱처럼 열심히 살아가고 있습니다.
우리의 성실은 어떻게 보상 받을 수 있을까요?
4. 예수 그리스도가 보상하신다
우리 또한 야곱과 같이 이해하기 힘든 삶을 살아가고 있을지도 모릅니다.
그러나 우리의 목적은 그리스도인으로서 예수 그리스도의 영광을 나타내는 것입니다.
그렇다면 나 혼자의 생활을 유지하기도 버거운데 예수님의 영광을 나타내는 것이 가능할까요?
이사야 53:1-6
1 우리가 전한 것을 누가 믿었느냐 여호와의 팔이 누구에게 나타났느냐
2 그는 주 앞에서 자라나기를 연한 순 같고 마른 땅에서 나온 뿌리 같아서 고운 모양도 없고 풍채도 없은즉 우리가 보기에 흠모할 만한 아름다운 것이 없도다
3 그는 멸시를 받아 사람들에게 버림 받았으며 간고를 많이 겪었으며 질고를 아는 자라 마치 사람들이 그에게서 얼굴을 가리는 것 같이 멸시를 당하였고 우리도 그를 귀히 여기지 아니하였도다
4 그는 실로 우리의 질고를 지고 우리의 슬픔을 당하였거늘 우리는 생각하기를 그는 징벌을 받아 하나님께 맞으며 고난을 당한다 하였노라
5 그가 찔림은 우리의 허물 때문이요 그가 상함은 우리의 죄악 때문이라 그가 징계를 받으므로 우리는 평화를 누리고 그가 채찍에 맞으므로 우리는 나음을 받았도다
6 우리는 다 양 같아서 그릇 행하여 각기 제 길로 갔거늘 여호와께서는 우리 모두의 죄악을 그에게 담당시키셨도다
예수님은 우리의 구원자가 되기 위해서 성실하게 최선을 다해 하나님이 명령하시는 일을 하였습니다.
하지만 예수님은 이에 대한 보상으로 사람들로부터 모욕과 수난을 당하셨습니다.
하나님은 예수님의 성실을 보상하시고 그의 지위를 회복하셨습니다.
예수님은 그의 희생을 성실과 희생을 통해 우리의 그리스도가 되셨습니다.
그분은 우리에게 영원한 생명을 주시는 구원자가 되셨습니다.
예수님의 삶은 불합리한 인생의 극치였습니다.
예수님의 탄생의 목적은 우리를 위한 죽음이었기 때문입니다.
하지만 그 죽음은 하나님의 뜻과 영광을 위한 것이었습니다.
결국 하나님은 예수님을 죽음으로부터 승리하게 하셨습니다.
당신의 삶이 힘드십니까? 당신의 삶이 이해되지 않습니까?
예수님의 삶을 생각하십시요. 당신을 위한 예수님의 고난과 죽음을 생각하십시요.
그리고 당신을 사랑하시고 동행하시는 예수님께 기도하십시요.
하나님의 주권은 오직 예수님을 통해서 실현되기 때문입니다.
하나님의 주권의 영역은 사후 세계가 뿐만이 아니라, 우리가 현재 살아가고 있는 이 땅에서도 이루어집니다.
이것은 하나님께서 야곱을 도와 라반과의 문제와 갈등을 해결해 주신 것과 같습니다.
예수님과 동행하기 위해서 가장 중요한 것은 당연히 자주 예수님을 만나는 것입니다.
어떻게 예수님을 만나야 할까요?
- 첫째, 예배를 통해서
- 둘째, 말씀읽기를 통해서
- 셋째, 기도를 통해서입니다.
매일매일 예수님의 이름을 부르십시요.
하나님의 놀라운 계획과 문제 해결을 반드시 경험하게 될 것입니다.
나를 가장 잘 아시는 예수님이 나와 내 인생을 멋진 길로 인도해 나가실 것입니다.
