God works through obedient people
48 and I bowed down and worshiped the LORD. I praised the LORD, the God of my master Abraham, who had led me on the right road to get the granddaughter of my master`s brother for his son.

0. Introduction : Glen James’ Story
A humble homeless man who returned a backpack full of cash and traveler’s checks to police said he felt “very, very good’’ to do it and used a ceremony honoring him at police headquarters to thank all the people who have ever given him money on the street.
Glen James said, “I don’t talk too much because I stutter.’’
But he handed out a handwritten statement in which he said, “Even if I were desperate for money, I would not have kept even a … penny of the money I found. I am extremely religious — God has always looked after me very well.’’
The statement also said, “I would like to take this opportunity to sincerely thank everyone — every pedestrian stranger — who has given me spare change. Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!’’
Police Commissioner Edward F. Davis said that James’s actions were “really a remarkable tribute to him and his honesty.’’
“He’s an honest guy and realized the property belonged to someone else,’’ Davis said.
The middle-aged man, balding, bespectacled, and thin, appeared friendly but shy and slightly overwhelmed by the attention from the media drawn to a feel-good story.
On his way out of the building after the news conference, the police department clerks gave him an ovation.
James said he had been homeless for several years. He chuckled as he said it felt good to return the money.
James found the backpack Saturday at the South Bay Center in Dorchester, a sprawling suburban-style shopping complex in Boston visible from the Southeast Expressway.
After making his discovery, James flagged down a passing Boston police officer and handed over the backpack.
The backpack contained $2,400 in cash, $39,500 in traveler’s checks, passports, and various personal papers, police said.
But the miracle didn’t stop here.
Mr. James’s good deeds impressed people, and 100 million won ($100,000) was collected in two days as a fundraising campaign to help him.
This is a story of a person’s good behavior that caused many people to do good, creating amazing miracles.
In this way, Genesis 24 shows that God’s vision is achieved through the obedience of many people, starting with the obedience of one person.
Today’s message is titled “God works through obedient people”, and it is taken out of Genesis chapter 24.
1. Obedient people
1-1. Abraham’s Obedience
Genesis 24:1-4; 8
1 Abraham was now old and well advanced in years, and the LORD had blessed him in every way.
2 He said to the chief servant in his household, the one in charge of all that he had, “Put your hand under my thigh.
3 I want you to swear by the LORD, the God of heaven and the God of earth, that you will not get a wife for my son from the daughters of the Canaanites, among whom I am living,
4 but will go to my country and my own relatives and get a wife for my son Isaac.”
8 If the woman is unwilling to come back with you, then you will be released from this oath of mine. Only do not take my son back there.”
We can see Abraham’s obedience through what he says to his chief servant.
Abraham’s last wish was to find his son Isaac’s spouse.
But more important to him than this was that his son Isaac should grow into a man of God.
Abraham was afraid of Isaac being exposed to the Gentile culture of serving other gods.
That’s why Abraham told him not to take his son to the Canaanites, even if he could not find one of his own relatives to be Isaac’s wife.
Abraham’s ultimate purpose was to live with God.
So he ordered his servant to trust and obey God completely.
This was Abraham’s obedience.
1-2. Abraham’s servant’s Obedience
Genesis 24:12; 26-27
12 Then he prayed, “O LORD, God of my master Abraham, give me success today, and show kindness to my master Abraham.
26 Then the man bowed down and worshiped the LORD,
27 saying, “Praise be to the LORD, the God of my master Abraham, who has not abandoned his kindness and faithfulness to my master. As for me, the LORD has led me on the journey to the house of my master`s relatives.”
We can see the obedience of Abraham’s servant through his actions.
He wanted to be guided by his master Abraham’s God, so he humbly asked God for help.
He gave his thoughts to God at every occasion and prayed.
Abraham’s servant was trusted by his master enough to be given his master’s power and authority to manage all Abraham’s possessions.
The greatest asset of Abraham’s he managed was “a life obedient to God”.
Abraham’s obedience had a profound effect on his servant’s faith.
As a result, this made Abraham’s servant obey God.
And the servant’s obedience helped him fulfill his master’s wishes and God’s vision.
1-3. Laban and Bethuel’s Obedience
Genesis 24:50-51
50 Laban and Bethuel answered, “This is from the LORD; we can say nothing to you one way or the other.
51 Here is Rebekah; take her and go, and let her become the wife of your master`s son, as the LORD has directed.”
We can see Laban and Bethuel’s obedience in the answers they gave to Abraham’s servant. They said that they would accept the marriage proposal unconditionally because God had directed it.
At that time, the custom was that a woman had no right to choose her groom.
That’s why Rebekah’s father Bethuel and brother Laban responded to the servant’s request on her behalf.
But this was not a marriage that was forced or violent.
We can confirm Rebekah’s sincerity about this marriage in the following passage.
1-4. Rebekah’s Obedience
Genesis 24:55-58
55 But her brother and her mother replied, “Let the girl remain with us ten days or so; then you may go.”
56 But he said to them, “Do not detain me, now that the LORD has granted success to my journey. Send me on my way so I may go to my master.”
57 Then they said, “Let`s call the girl and ask her about it.”
58 So they called Rebekah and asked her, “Will you go with this man?” “I will go,” she said.
We can see Rebekah’s obedience through her decision.
Even though the wedding was already arranged, it was not easy for Rebekah to leave the family she’d always lived together with. The reason for this is that marriage removes us from the intimate closeness and bonds that we’ve shared with our family.
And as for Rebekah, she was not ready for marriage at all.
Look at this situation. She was to follow a strange servant, to go on a long journey, almost like an adventure, to meet her future husband.
This choice will completely change her life.
Rebekah didn’t know anything about Isaac, who would be her future husband, but she made a quick decision.
Because she believed in God’s will and obeyed, she was able to make a quick decision in anticipation of the future that God would lead her to.
2. The result of obedience: The Marriage of Isaac and Rebekah
Genesis 24:66-67
66 Then the servant told Isaac all he had done.
67 Isaac brought her into the tent of his mother Sarah, and he married Rebekah. So she became his wife, and he loved her; and Isaac was comforted after his mother`s death.
We can see the result of obedience through the marriage of Isaac and Rebekah.
The passage above implies that their love deepened after their marriage, and it is the result of many people’s obedience.
Therefore, in this story, all that God has done has happened through the obedience of the people who followed his will and plan.
Many people obeyed God, and God fulfilled their wishes.
Ultimately, the Bible testifies that God blesses those who obey Him.
3. The result of Jesus’ obedience: The cross of salvation
Philippians 2:5-11
5 Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus:
6 Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped,
7 but made himself nothing, taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness.
8 And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself and became obedient to death — even death on a cross!
9 Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name,
10 that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth,
11 and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
Abraham, Abraham’s servant, Laban, Bethuel, and Rebekah…
We have looked at the fact that God achieved his vision through obedient people in Genesis 24.
So what did God achieve through Jesus’ obedience?
The result of Jesus’ obedience was the cross of salvation.
As we know, Jesus is our perfect role model of obedience.
We can see the ideal Christian life in his obedience.
Jesus always obeyed the will of his father, God, even though he was God incarnate.
This is the attitude of the Christian life that Jesus taught us.
Jesus’ obedience made him walk in faith to the cross of death.
But the result of that obedience was that he emerged from death to resurrection and eternal life.
In the end, Jesus became our savior and our master, through his obedience.
For us, the path of obedience may seem a narrow path, a path of hardship, or even a path of death. But the ultimate conclusion of our obedience is salvation and eternal life.
God’s vision is achieved through our obedience.
And the results of that obedience return to us as God’s good blessings.
I hope we will spend this week obeying God’s will.

미국 보스턴에서 노숙 생활을 하고 있는 글랜 제임스 씨,
카메라를 향해 환한 웃음을 지어 보입니다.
“기부라는 건 말이죠… 내 인생에 전혀 다른 새로운 삶을 가져다 줄 겁니다.”

경찰로부터 상패를 전달 받았습니다.
하지만 기적은 여기서 그치지 않았습니다.
제임스 씨의 선행은 잔잔한 감동을 주었고,
그를 돕자는 모금 운동이 벌어지면서
성금 1억원이 이틀 만에 모아졌습니다.

정말 좋은 얘기라고 생각했습니다.
여러분이 알고 있는 것처럼 전세계에 널리 알려야 하는 얘기라고 느꼈습니다.
이것은 한 사람의 선한 행동 하나가 많은 사람들의 선한 행동을 일으켜서, 놀라운 기적을 만들게 된 이야기 입니다.
이와 같이 창세기 24장은, 한 사람의 순종을 시작으로 각 사람의 순종을 통해 하나님의 비전이 이루어지는 것을 보여주고 있습니다.
1. 순종한 사람들
1-1. 아브라함의 순종
창세기 24:1-4; 8
1 아브라함이 나이가 많아 늙었고 여호와께서 그에게 범사에 복을 주셨더라
2 아브라함이 자기 집 모든 소유를 맡은 늙은 종에게 이르되 청하건대 내 허벅지 밑에 네 손을 넣으라
3 내가 너에게 하늘의 하나님, 땅의 하나님이신 여호와를 가리켜 맹세하게 하노니 너는 내가 거주하는 이 지방 가나안 족속의 딸 중에서 내 아들을 위하여 아내를 택하지 말고
4 내 고향 내 족속에게로 가서 내 아들 이삭을 위하여 아내를 택하라
8 만일 여자가 너를 따라 오려고 하지 아니하면 나의 이 맹세가 너와 상관이 없나니 오직 내 아들을 데리고 그리로 가지 말지니라
우리는 아브라함이 그의 종에게 하는 말을 통해 그의 순종을 발견할 수 있습니다.
아브라함의 마지막 소망은 아들 이삭의 배우자를 구하는 것이었습니다.
그러나 그에게 소망보다 중요한 것은 이삭이 하나님의 사람으로 성장하는 것이었습니다.
아브라함은 이삭이 이방 신들을 섬기는 문화에 노출되는 것을 두려워 하였습니다.
그래서 아브라함은 종에게 이삭의 아내 될 사람을 구하지 못할지라도, 아들을 그리로 데리고 가지 말라고 하신 것입니다.
아브라함의 최종 목적은 하나님과 동행하는 삶이었습니다.
그래서 그는 그의 종에게 하나님을 온전히 신뢰하고 순종하라고 명령하였습니다.
이것이 아브라함의 순종의 모습이었습니다.
1-2. 아브라함의 종의 순종
창세기 24:12; 26-27
12 그가 이르되 우리 주인 아브라함의 하나님 여호와여 원하건대 오늘 나에게 순조롭게 만나게 하사 내 주인 아브라함에게 은혜를 베푸시옵소서
26 이에 그 사람이 머리를 숙여 여호와께 경배하고
27 이르되 나의 주인 아브라함의 하나님 여호와를 찬송하나이다 나의 주인에게 주의 사랑과 성실을 그치지 아니하셨사오며 여호와께서 길에서 나를 인도하사 내 주인의 동생 집에 이르게 하셨나이다 하니라
우리는 아브라함의 종의 행동을 통해 그의 순종을 발견 할 수 있습니다.
그는 그의 주인 아브라함의 하나님의 인도를 받기를 원했습니다.
아브라함의 종은 겸손하게 하나님께 도움을 요청하였습니다.
그는 매 상황마다 자신의 생각을 내려놓고, 하나님께 기도하며 물었습니다.
아브라함의 종은 아브라함이 모든 소유를 맡길 정도로 신뢰하는 사람이었습니다.
그가 아브라함으로부터 배운 가장 커다란 자산은 “하나님께 순종하는 삶“ 이었습니다.
아브라함의 순종은 그의 종의 신앙심에 지대한 영향을 끼쳤습니다.
결과적으로는 아브라함의 종이 하나님께 순종함으로써, 아브라함의 소망과 하나님의 비전을 성취하도록 만들었습니다.
1-3. 브두엘과 라반의 순종
창세기 24:50-51
50 라반과 브두엘이 대답하여 이르되 이 일이 여호와께로 말미암았으니 우리는 가부를 말할 수 없노라
51 리브가가 당신 앞에 있으니 데리고 가서 여호와의 명령대로 그를 당신의 주인의 아들의 아내가 되게 하라
우리는 라반과 브두엘이 아브라함의 종에게 한 대답을 통해, 그들의 순종을 발견 할 수 있습니다.
그들은 하나님이 결정하셨기 때문에, 우리는 무조건 그 제안을 받아들이겠다고 대답하였습니다.
그 당시 풍습으로는 여자가 자신의 신랑을 선택할 권리가 없었습니다.
그래서 리브가 대신 그녀의 아버지와 오빠가 종의 질문에 대답한 것입니다.
그러나 이것은 강요나 폭력으로 이루어진 혼인 과정이 아니었습니다.
우리는 이 결혼에 대한 리브가의 진심을 다음 파트에서 확인할 수 있습니다.
1-4. 리브가의 순종
창세기 24:55-58
55 리브가의 오라버니와 그의 어머니가 이르되 이 아이로 하여금 며칠 또는 열흘을 우리와 함께 머물게 하라 그 후에 그가 갈 것이니라
56 그 사람이 그들에게 이르되 나를 만류하지 마소서 여호와께서 내게 형통한 길을 주셨으니 나를 보내어 내 주인에게로 돌아가게 하소서
57 그들이 이르되 우리가 소녀를 불러 그에게 물으리라 하고
58 리브가를 불러 그에게 이르되 네가 이 사람과 함께 가려느냐 그가 대답하되 가겠나이다
우리는 리브가의 결단을 통해 그녀의 순종을 발견할 수 있습니다.
이미 결혼식 예정된 상태라도, 함께 살던 가족을 떠나는 일은 쉽지 않은 일입니다.
그 이유는 결혼으로 인해 가족을 통해 느낄 수 있는 친밀감과 유대감으로부터 멀어지기 때문입니다.
그런데 리브가의 경우, 그녀는 결혼에 대한 어떠한 준비도 되지 않은 상태였습니다.
이런 상황에서 낯선 남자를 따라, 미래의 남편을 만나러 가는 것은 그녀에게는 모험과 같았습니다. 이 선택을 통해 그녀의 인생이 완전히 바뀌게 될 것이기 때문입니다.
리브가는 미래의 남편이 될 이삭에 대해서 알지 못했지만, 그녀는 신속하게 결단하였습니다.
그녀는 하나님의 뜻을 믿고 순종하였습니다. 그래서 그녀는 하나님께서 인도하시는 미래를 기대하며 결단할 수 있었던 것입니다.
2. 순종한 사람들의 결과 : 이삭과 리브가의 결혼
창세기 24:66-67
66 종이 그 행한 일을 다 이삭에게 아뢰매
67 이삭이 리브가를 인도하여 그의 어머니 사라의 장막으로 들이고 그를 맞이하여 아내로 삼고 사랑하였으니 이삭이 그의 어머니를 장례한 후에 위로를 얻었더라
우리는 이삭과 리브가의 결혼을 통해, 순종한 사람들의 결과를 확인 할 수 있습니다.
그들의 결혼식에 대해서는
아주 간단히 암시되어 있습니다.
그들의 사랑이 깊어졌다는 사실은 많은 사람들의 순종의 결과를 나타냅니다.
이는 하나님이 그들의 순종을 통해 모든 일들 형통하게 하셨다는 것을 의미합니다.
많은 사람들이 하나님께 순종하였더니 하나님이 그들의 소망을 이루어 주신 것입니다.
결국 하나님은 순종하는 사람들에게 결과적으로 유익을 주시는 분이라는 사실을 성서에서 증언하고 있습니다.
3. 예수님의 순종의 결과 : 구원의 십자가
빌립보서 2:5-11
5 너희 안에 이 마음을 품으라 곧 그리스도 예수의 마음이니
6 그는 근본 하나님의 본체시나 하나님과 동등됨을 취할 것으로 여기지 아니하시고
7 오히려 자기를 비워 종의 형체를 가지사 사람들과 같이 되셨고
8 사람의 모양으로 나타나사 자기를 낮추시고 죽기까지 복종하셨으니 곧 십자가에 죽으심이라
9 이러므로 하나님이 그를 지극히 높여 모든 이름 위에 뛰어난 이름을 주사
10 하늘에 있는 자들과 땅에 있는 자들과 땅 아래에 있는 자들로 모든 무릎을 예수의 이름에 꿇게 하시고
11 모든 입으로 예수 그리스도를 주라 시인하여 하나님 아버지께 영광을 돌리게 하셨느니라
아브라함, 아브라함의 종, 브두엘과 라반, 리브가…
우리는 하나님이 그들의 순종을 통해 그의 비전을 성취하셨다는 사실을 본문을 통해 살펴보았습니다.
그렇다면 하나님은 예수님의 순종을 통해 무엇을 성취 하셨을까요?
예수님의 순종의 결과는 구원의 십자가였습니다.
우리가 알고 있듯이 예수님은 순종의 롤모델입니다.
우리는 예수님의 순종을 통해 그리스도인의 이상적인 삶의 모습을 발견 할 수 있습니다.
예수님은 그가 참 하나님임에도 불구하고, 언제나 아버지 하나님의 뜻에 순종하였습니다.
이것이 예수님이 우리에게 가르쳐주신 그리스도인의 삶의 태도입니다.
예수님의 순종은 그를 죽음의 십자가로 걸어가게 만들었습니다.
그러나 그 순종의 결과는 죽음으로부터 부활과 영원한 생명으로 나타났습니다.
결국 예수님은 순종을 통해 우리의 구원자, 우리의 주인이 되셨습니다.
우리에게 순종의 길이 좁은 길, 고난의 길, 심지어는 죽음의 길로 보일 수도 있습니다.
그러나 그 순종의 결과는 구원입니다. 그 결과는 생명입니다.
하나님의 비전은 우리의 순종을 통해 성취됩니다.
그리고 그 순종의 결과는 우리에게 선한 것으로 돌아옵니다.
우리가 하나님의 뜻에 순종하는 이번 한 주 보내길 소망합니다.
