The meaning of Jesus’ wedding miracle
1 On the third day a wedding took place at Cana in Galilee. Jesus` mother was there, 2 and Jesus and his disciples had also been invited to the wedding.
John 2:1-2
0. Is Jesus our heavenly problem solver?
Today, I’m going to share a message from John chapter 2 with the title of “The meaning of Jesus’ wedding miracle”.
As Christians, we pray to God in the name of Jesus.
Think about your prayers for a moment.
What do you usually pray for?
Many Christians, including most of us, pray mainly to solve our own problems.
So many people rely on Jesus as a problem solver.
Do you also rely on Jesus as a problem solver for your life?
But what if Jesus didn’t solve your problem? Would you continue to believe in him?
What would you do if you prayed for the solution to a problem, and the problem didn’t get any better?
1. Is Jesus indifferent to human problems?
John 2:3-5
3 When the wine was gone, Jesus` mother said to him, “They have no more wine.” 4 “Dear woman, why do you involve me?” Jesus replied. “My time has not yet come.” 5 His mother said to the servants, “Do whatever he tells you.”
Jesus, his mother, and his disciples were invited to a wedding feast in Cana.
However, during the course of the party, a problem arose in that the supply of wine for the party guest became completely exhausted after a while.
In the same way that we seek Jesus when we have a problem, Jesus’ mother also called to him for help. However, Jesus’ response didn’t meet his mother’s expectations.
The following is a literal translation of Jesus’ answer:
“Woman, what do you want from me?”
This would have sounded harsh to Jesus’ own mother.
But Jesus had to wait for God to tell him what to do.
Mark 12:28-31
28 One of the teachers of the law came and heard them debating. Noticing that Jesus had given them a good answer, he asked him, “Of all the commandments, which is the most important?”
29 “The most important one,” answered Jesus, “is this: `Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one. 30 Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.` 31 The second is this: `Love your neighbor as yourself.` There is no commandment greater than these.”
Jesus practiced this first commandment that was mentioned by loving God first, above all other things, and seeking his will. It was only after the first commandment was satisfied and Jesus received God’s will that he loved his neighbors according to the second commandment mentioned. This was Jesus’ way of obeying God.
2. The meaning of Jesus’ miracle
The story of the wedding ceremony in Cana implies everything about what Jesus is and what he brings to this world.
Isaiah 62:4-5
4 No longer will they call you Deserted, or name your land Desolate. But you will be called Hephzibah, and your land Beulah; for the LORD will take delight in you, and your land will be married. 5 As a young man marries a maiden, so will your sons marry you; as a bridegroom rejoices over his bride, so will your God rejoice over you.
In prophecy, the time of the future salvation of Israel is portrayed with the symbol of a happy wedding ceremony. So, what is the significance of Jesus appearing at this wedding feast?
His appearance there was to show that the ultimate achievement of happiness in a human life can only be completed through God. Jesus provided wine to people, which at that time, was a very important part of the wedding feast. (In fact, to run out of wine was a great embarrassment to the hosts of the party.)
This wine symbolizes the enduring joy and abundant life in Christ that Jesus gives to his people through the Holy Spirit.
John 2:6-9
6 Nearby stood six stone water jars, the kind used by the Jews for ceremonial washing, each holding from twenty to thirty gallons. 7 Jesus said to the servants, “Fill the jars with water”; so they filled them to the brim.
8 Then he told them, “Now draw some out and take it to the master of the banquet.” They did so, 9 and the master of the banquet tasted the water that had been turned into wine. He did not realize where it had come from, though the servants who had drawn the water knew. Then he called the bridegroom aside
Another piece of symbolism can be found here. It was important to prepare the new wine in the jars used in the Jewish purification ceremony because it symbolizes that Jesus has changed the old covenant into a new covenant, transforming the order of the law into the order of grace.
John 2:11
11 This, the first of his miraculous signs, Jesus performed at Cana in Galilee. He thus revealed his glory, and his disciples put their faith in him.
So, what was the meaning of Jesus’ miracle?
Ultimately, it means that the time of the salvation of all mankind has begun with Jesus.
Through Jesus, the blessing God ultimately gives to people has become a reality.
Through this experience, the disciples of Jesus grew in their faith of Jesus as savior.
3. Who is Jesus?
As we discussed in the beginning, we may think of Jesus as a problem solver in life because Jesus provided wine to the hosts of the wedding feast who had been in trouble. But the true purpose of Jesus’ miracle was to open people’s eyes and hearts to believe in him as the son of God.
You see, even if Jesus solves someone’s problem with a miracle, everything will be meaningless if they do not believe in Jesus as a savior.
A person who believes in their own sovereignty over their life will only confess Jesus as a problem solver, if even that. But the person who believes in God’s sovereignty over their life will confess Jesus as a savior and master.
Christians do not believe in Jesus merely because he is a problem solver.
Christians serve Jesus because he is the true God and their master.
You see, as powerful as you think you are in your own life, the decision to solve your own problem depends on God, not you. (Take the current coronavirus problem as an example.)
What is more important than solving every problem is to discover Jesus Christ in the midst of the problem.
Confess Jesus as your master.
He will lead you to the best path in your life.

0. 예수님은 문제 해결사?
오늘은 “예수님의 기적의 의미”라는 제목으로 요한복음 2장의 말씀을 나누도록 하겠습니다.
그리스도인 우리는 예수님의 이름으로 하나님께 기도합니다.
잠시 당신의 기도에 대해서 생각해 보십시요.
당신은 주로 어떤 기도를 하고 있습니까?
우리를 포함한 많은 그리스도인은 주로 자신의 문제를 해결하기 위해 기도합니다.
그래서 많은 사람들이 예수님을 문제 해결사로 고백합니다.
당신 또한 예수님을 인생의 문제를 해결하는 해결사로 고백합니까?
만약 예수님이 당신의 문제를 해결하지 않는다면, 당신은 예수님을 계속 믿으실 건가요?
만약 당신이 기도를 해도 문제가 전혀 나아지지 않는다면 어떻게 하실 것인가요?
1. 사람의 문제에 무관심한 예수님
요한복음 2:3-5
3 포도주가 떨어진지라 예수의 어머니가 예수에게 이르되 저들에게 포도주가 없다 하니
4 예수께서 이르시되 여자여 나와 무슨 상관이 있나이까 내 때가 아직 이르지 아니하였나이다
5 그의 어머니가 하인들에게 이르되 너희에게 무슨 말씀을 하시든지 그대로 하라 하니라
예수님의 어머니와 예수님, 그리고 그의 제자들이 가나에서 열리는 결혼식에 초대를 받았습니다.
그런데 결혼식장에서 포도주가 떨어지는 문제가 발생하였습니다.
우리가 문제가 생기면 예수님을 찾듯이 예수님의 어머니도 예수님께 도움을 요청했습니다.
그러나 예수님은 예수님의 어머니의 기대와는 다른 대답을 하였습니다.
예수님의 대답을 번역하면 다음과 같습니다.
“여자여, 나와 당신에게 무엇이 있습니까?”
이 말은 예수님의 어머니에게 냉혹하게 들렸을 것입니다.
하지만 예수님은 하나님이 알려주시는 때를 기다려야 했습니다.
마가복음 12:28-31
28 서기관 중 한 사람이 그들이 변론하는 것을 듣고 예수께서 잘 대답하신 줄을 알고 나아와 묻되 모든 계명 중에 첫째가 무엇이니이까
29 예수께서 대답하시되 첫째는 이것이니 이스라엘아 들으라 주 곧 우리 하나님은 유일한 주시라
30 네 마음을 다하고 목숨을 다하고 뜻을 다하고 힘을 다하여 주 너의 하나님을 사랑하라 하신 것이요
31 둘째는 이것이니 네 이웃을 네 자신과 같이 사랑하라 하신 것이라 이보다 더 큰 계명이 없느니라
예수님은 첫째 계명에 따라 먼저 하나님을 사랑하고 하나님의 뜻을 구하셨습니다.
그리고 예수님은 하나님께로부터 뜻을 받은 이후에 이웃을 사랑하셨습니다.
그것이 하나님께 순종하는 예수님의 모습이었습니다.
2. 예수님의 기적의 의미
‘가나의 혼인잔치 이야기’는 예수님이 어떤 분이신지, 또 그가 이 세상에 무엇을 가지고 오는지에 대한 모든 것을 암시합니다.
이사야 62:4-5
4 다시는 너를 버림 받은 자라 부르지 아니하며 다시는 네 땅을 황무지라 부르지 아니하고 오직 너를 헵시바라 하며 네 땅을 쁄라라 하리니 이는 여호와께서 너를 기뻐하실 것이며 네 땅이 결혼한 것처럼 될 것임이라
5 마치 청년이 처녀와 결혼함 같이 네 아들들이 너를 취하겠고 신랑이 신부를 기뻐함 같이 네 하나님이 너를 기뻐하시리라
이스라엘의 미래적인 구원의 때는 행복한 혼인 예식이라는 상징으로 표현됩니다.
예수님이 혼인 예식에 등장하셨다는 의미는 무엇일까요?
이는 인간의 삶의 궁극적인 성취와 행복은 하나님을 통해 완성된다는 것을 알려주는 것입니다.
예수님은 사람들에게 포도주를 제공하셨습니다.
그 당시에, 포도주는 혼인 예식의 용품으로 매우 인기가 있었습니다.
포도주는 종말적인 기쁨과 삶의 풍요를 상징하는데, 이 이야기에서 포도주는 예수님이 자신의 사람들에게 선사하는 생명 또는 성령을 의미합니다.
요한복음 2:6-9
6 거기에 유대인의 정결 예식을 따라 두세 통 드는 돌항아리 여섯이 놓였는지라
7 예수께서 그들에게 이르시되 항아리에 물을 채우라 하신즉 아귀까지 채우니
8 이제는 떠서 연회장에게 갖다 주라 하시매 갖다 주었더니
9 연회장은 물로 된 포도주를 맛보고도 어디서 났는지 알지 못하되 물 떠온 하인들은 알더라 연회장이 신랑을 불러
유대의 정결 예식에 쓰이는 항아리에 새로운 포도주를 마련하는 것은 중요한 의미를 가지고 있습니다.
이는 예수님께서 옛 언약을 새 언약으로, 율법의 질서를 은혜의 질서로 바꾸셨다는 것을 의미합니다.
요한복음 2:11
11 예수께서 이 첫 표적을 갈릴리 가나에서 행하여 그의 영광을 나타내시매 제자들이 그를 믿으니라
예수님의 기적의 의미는 무엇이었을까요?
그것은 예수님으로부터 구원의 때가 시작되었다는 것을 의미합니다.
예수님을 통해, 하나님이 사람들에게 궁극적으로 주시려는 복이 현실이 되었습니다.
예수님의 제자들은 이러한 체험을 통해 예수님을 구원자로 믿는 믿음을 가지게 되었습니다.
3. 예수님은 누구신가?
우리는 예수님이 문제를 당한 사람들에게 포도주를 제공해 주셨다는 사실을 통해서, 예수님을 우리의 삶의 문제를 해결해 주는 해결사로 생각할지도 모르겠다.
그러나 예수님은 기적의 목적은 사람들이 하나님의 아들, 예수 그리스도를 믿게 하는 것이었다.
예수님이 기적을 통해 사람들의 문제를 해결해 준다 하여도, 그들이 예수님을 구원자로 믿지 않는다면 모든 것이 무의미하다.
인생의 주권을 자신이 가지고 있는 사람은 예수님을 그저 문제 해결사로 고백한다.
인생의 주권이 하나님께 있다고 고백하는 사람은 예수님을 구원자, 주인으로 고백한다.
그리스도인은 예수님이 문제 해결사이기 때문에 그를 믿는 것이 아니다.
그가 참 하나님이시고 나의 주인이기 때문에 그를 섬기는 것이다.
문제 해결의 결정권은 내가 아닌 하나님께 달려있다.
우리에게 문제 해결보다 더 중요한 것은 문제 속에서 나에게 나타나시는 예수 그리스도를 발견하는 것이다.
