Who is God? Who am I?

Genesis 1:26-29 (Pastor Eddie Kang)

My story: From 2017-2020 I worked for an Australian church – on a student Visa. God brought me here because I can understand your situation as a foreigner (I was one in Australia).

God has a good plan for AICF and your life. God has a great plan, and I learned a lot from Pastor Heo last Sunday about AICF. Even though he leaves us, I believe we are always together in God.

I hope we get strength, peace, and vision through this worship and that our congregation will pray for you from now on. You have a lot of prayer helpers from now on. That’s great news!

Including Pastor Heo, I met Pastor Brian, Brother Lee, Sarah, Isaac, Joshua, Matthew, and others. After meeting them, I thank God for making our lovely meeting time.

Due to the Covid-19 virus, we cannot meet together in person. I really want to meet you in person, and do worship together in church.

Today’s text is Genesis 1:26-29

Genesis 1:26-29

26 Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, in our likeness, and let them rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air, over the livestock, over all the earth, and over all the creatures that move along the ground.”

27 So God created man in his own image,
in the image of God he created him;
male and female he created them.

28 God blessed them and said to them, “Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air and over every living creature that moves on the ground.”

29 Then God said, “I give you every seed-bearing plant on the face of the whole earth and every tree that has fruit with seed in it. They will be yours for food.

Who is God?

0. Who am I?

What’s a human being? There are so many answers for this question. One is: humans need meaning to live their lives.

Story:

A person was on his way to work, when he was suddenly hit by some water from the building. He was angry that he couldn’t find the reason for this. A moment later, a woman came out and told him, “My son tried to water the plant, but made a mistake. Sorry for the inconvenience.” He said, “Don’t worry about it. Have a good day.”

He may have ruined his day, but he knew the reason. If there is a problem, we can withstand it if you know why. Therefore, it’s important to know the meaning of your life. To know this, we need to know “Who am I?”

Who knows this the best? Yourself, best friend, parents? The right answer is GOD – the Creator. So, first we have to know who God is.

1. The good will of God

Why did God create us? How does he look at us?

Story:

A teenager said, “I hate my life! Why did you give birth to me without my consent?” This was said to hurt her mom. What was her thinking?

No parents give birth to children for unhappy lives. They want their children to live happy lives. Like this, God’s desire is similar for his children, and we can see a reflection of his love and purpose for us through our parents.

“God saw all that he had made and it was very good.”

God wants us to live a happy life, so he created us. God’s will is good will. So, why do people curse God and complain about others? Because they have not understood God’s good will for us.

If we know the reason for pain, we can endure it and keep going. But if we don’t, we have to live a hard life without understanding.

Let’s consider God’s Good Will through the Bible from now on.

2. Creator God

“In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.”

Genesis 1:1

God made everything, including us. So the source of all things in this world is God.

When we go to church, we often hear about “obedience” – we know this but it is difficult to practice it.

We have to work, study hard, do homework, but in order to obey, we have to give our precious time, energy, and heart to God. Sometimes we think that we want to save our time and energy. When we think about this, we feel uncomfortable and worry about whether or not I’m a real Christian.

“How much do I have to give to God?”

“The land must not be sold permanently because the land is mine and you are but aliens and my tenants.”

Leviticus 25:23

We are only aliens and tenants living in the land that God GAVE us. There is nothing of ours in the land of God.

Remember the teenager who complained to her mother? “I hate my life! Why did you give birth to me without my consent?”

In fact, no one can decide when / where / how they are born. They are not the masters of their own lives. The master is GOD. Also, God determines when / where / how we die. God has the summary, but we forget this facts. The time between birth and death is the “land of God” – but it is mistaken as “my land”.

The master of our lives is also the master of our life process. In conclusion, it does not make sense to give mind to God to obey, because EVERYTHING we have has been given from God and we are only aliens and tenants in the land of God.

So what keeps us from obeying God? We think our deaths are far away and we are the owners and masters of our own lives. So, we run after our own aspirations. But only GOD knows how much time we have left.

Earlier, I said that we need meaning to live our lives. If we have received a lot from God, the master, we are like the servants in the parable of the Talents in the bible (Matthew 25?). Who is the servant that the master is pleased with? The one who made the Talent INCREASE.

What talents have you received from God? Dancing? Singing? Listening to others troubles? We have a responsibility to return our talents to the glory of God our master. NOTHING is mine. It is obedience to give back what is not mine.

3. Companion God

“They will call him Emmanuel which means ‘God with us.'”

Matthew 1:23b

God does not make us and stay far away. He is with us always, as the Holy Spirit and Jesus, and there is joy when we accompany God.

4. Judge God

“For the Israelites belong to me as servants. They are my servants whom I brought out of Egypt. I am the Lord, your God.”

Leviticus 25:55

We are the servants of God and he is the best master for us. We must follow the word of God, a good master. But some people misunderstand him.

“Why could God create people and judge them harshly without loving them to the end?”

Story:

A child when shopping with her mother. While her mother was looking at the items, she came to her mother with someone else’s wallet.

She expected that her (sweet) mother would praise her. But she was angry and said, “This is wrong!” She told her to quickly return it to the original owner and receive a punishment.

Is not the image we understand the same as the expectation of this child? Why does God judge us while also loving us? Because he is JUST.

With justice, people can live happily in the world created by God. So, God cannot forgive a servant who is not just. He accompanies us and teaches us. He expects us to realize justice and live justly.

5. Savior God

You know AS? (After service)

This system means that if you have a problem with items that you purchased during the AS (warranty) period, you can get them fixed freely.

The period of GOD’S AS is unlimited!

When I ask God to fix my bad habits, the wonderful law of God responds! God not only gave us the whole world, but also gave us himself: JESUS.

When we worry about something we don’t have, remember that he gave us HIMSELF through Jesus. He takes responsibility for us, so we can live without fear.

6. Conclusion

Let’s obey God, our master in order to understand our own lives. We can participate in what God does – and this is a beautiful way to live our lives most brilliantly!

Let’s pray.
