I wanted to create some art that would:
So, some things I began researching included:
Eventually, this led me to considering how the stone in front of the tomb might begin to look like a solar eclipse as it were being rolled away if there was a great light behind it. So, I started searching for “Photoshop eclipse tutorials” and eventually stumbled upon a pretty good one by Abduzeedo that helped me to create this art:
Here’s the collection of Sermon Art for Pastor Brian’s “No More” (aka “God’s Non-Remembrance of Sin”) series. The unique thing about this series was that he chose various verses from throughout the Bible to focus on, so I updated the background and verse designs every Saturday to match the verse for that week. These verses were used on the front of the Bulletin every week. I decided to design these because a single verse is difficult to fit into a large space (like the front of the bulletin) without some kind of visual help (like a picture or design).
The original verse that the Pastor sent me to start this series was Isaiah 43:25: “I, even I, am he who blots out your transgressions for my own sake and remembers your sins no more.”
There were a few good, strong vocabulary choices in the verse that helped me to decide upon and hone the theme (I actually didn’t know this would be a 4-part series at that time – I assumed it was just a single sermon):
I’ve always been interested in how pastors preach that “Jesus blood covers sinners so that when God looks at us, he doesn’t see our sin, but the blood of his son.” Therefore, I wanted to SHOW Jesus’ blood very clearly covering over sins. And what better representation of sin that “original sin” with the apple? I found a Creative Commons vector series of apples being eaten and thought it was a perfect visual to show how we may sin MULTIPLE times, and yet God CHOOSES (hence the hand and paintbrush) to cover over our sins and remember them no more.

I drew the concept from Les Miserables, using the same font, font-treatment, and a similar background and silver candlestick holders. The reason for this is simple:
Onesimus was a slave who (probably) stole something from his master’s house when he fled – in much a similar way that Jean Valjean stole the silver candlesticks from the Bishop when he fled.
The two people are quite similar in that sense, so I thought a Les Miserables treatment would be a good fit.

Matthew 1:23, 28:18-20 (Our Christmas sermon)
1:23 “The virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel”–which means, “God with us.”
28:18 Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”
(Notes: I wanted to make something that looked both like Jesus’ birth AND ascension – that massive star does just the thing.)
Psalm 19:1
The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands.
(Notes: This image is a combination of a few real photographs – one, the “Christmas Tree Cluster” galaxy in the sky; two, the Aurora Borealis. I merely doctored up what God’s already made. He’s a much better artist than I.)

I used a generic tapestry texture as the background – as if it were Paul’s actual letter. Then, I copied out the entire first chapter of Galatians and put in on the tapestry in the Sherlock Holmes font.
I also wanted to create an effect as if a giant stamp that said “Justified” were pressed into the paper – as if someone were looking at everyone’s “life papers” and marking them as “Justified” or “Condemned.” I used the Old Stamper font for this part. I also added some splotches of blood to show that Jesus’ blood is what ultimately justifies.

In these chapters, Moses begins to receive the Law from God. After the fatherly advice he’s received from Jethro about teaching the people the laws and ways of God, now is a pretty good time for those laws to be set in stone – and they are – well, 10 of them at least.
