0. The meaning of Christmas
When we celebrate Christmas every year, what do people usually do to celebrate?
We may sing Christmas carols, decorate the Christmas tree, exchange gifts, and so much more.
But of the many people who celebrate Christmas, relatively few know the true meaning of Christmas. So for this Christmas service, I’m going to share a message titled “The meaning of Christmas” from John Chapter 1.
1. Who is Jesus?
John 1:1-4
1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was with God in the beginning. 3 Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. 4 In him was life, and that life was the light of men.
Christmas is the day we celebrate the human birth of Jesus.
In other words, this the day set aside on the Christian calendar for Jesus’ birthday.
But why is Jesus’ birth so important? We need to know who Jesus is, the master of Christmas.
Jesus has the same divinity as God.
Jesus was with God in eternity before the creation of the world.
He is the source of all things. Through him all things were created, and even now, he is sustaining all Creation. There is light and life in him.
2. What is human existence?
John 1:9-13
9 The true light that gives light to every man was coming into the world. 10 He was in the world, and though the world was made through him, the world did not recognize him. 11 He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him 12 Yet to all who received him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God — 13 children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband`s will, but born of God.
Jesus came to the people as light and life.
But people did not recognize Jesus, and they did not confess him as their savior.
Therefore, those who do not recognize Jesus, the master and source of life, are defined as sinners by the holy God. But for those who confess Jesus as their savior, God no longer sees them as sinners. Rather, God has given them the right and privilege to be called his children, the children of God. This confession of faith in Jesus Christ is the dividing standard between God’s children and sinners, or non-believers.
3. What is the church?
If you have confessed Jesus Christ as your personal Lord and Savior, then you have been recognized as a child of God through this confession which is based on your faith.
The problem with your sins has been solved through your faith in Jesus.
So then, why does the church exist, if the problem of sin has disappeared through faith in Christ?
In John chapter 1, John testifies about the light and life in Jesus.
And this light and life is bestowed abundantly upon the church due to the grace of Jesus.
The church is a community of people who believe in Jesus Christ, and the reason the church exists is because Jesus remains with us and in us and continually gives us grace. Jesus wants Christians to gather, so that his light and life will be passed on to the world through the church.
4. Why did the Word become flesh?
John 1:14; 17-18
14 The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the One and Only, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.

17 For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. 18 No one has ever seen God, but God the One and Only, who is at the Father`s side, has made him known.
It is very important for us to know why Jesus came to us in flesh.
First, we must look at the meaning of “flesh” in verse 14.
“Flesh” is a term for “finite human expression” and is distinguished from the eternal being of God.
The Christian idea that God can come down to Earth in flesh and achieve salvation for us was ridiculed by the religious thought leaders in the surrounding world at the time John wrote his gospel. But nevertheless, the Christian church continued to strongly testify about Christ in this way.
If we read the Old Testament, we can see the truth that “no one can see God.”
But in Jesus, something amazing happened. God revealed himself to man in a physical representation. This was God’s self-revelation. This is Jesus Christ.
God came to us in the form of a human being in order to save our lives. God, the creator of all things, humbled himself and took on the appearance of one of his own creations to commune with his creation, to have fellowship with us, to empathize with us, and ultimately to rescue us from sin and death. This is God’s amazing grace for us.
5. What does it mean to believe in Jesus?
What does it mean to believe in Jesus?
To believe in Jesus is to make a complete acknowledgement of God’s self-revelation, in the form of Jesus, where the Word of God has become flesh. It is to open ourselves completely to Jesus, to submit our lives, our will, our hopes and plans, our future, our destiny to him, and obey him completely and wholeheartedly. So let us celebrate the birth of Jesus at this time and confess him as our Savior!

0. 성탄절의 의미
우리는 매년 성탄절을 맞이합니다.
사람들은 성탄절에 보통 무엇을 할까요?
크리스마스 캐롤 부르기, 크리스마스 트리 장식, 선물 교환 등이 있습니다.
그러나 성탄절의 의미를 잘 알고 있는 사람은 많지 않습니다.
오늘은 <성탄절의 의미>라는 제목으로 요한복음 1장의 말씀을 나누도록 하겠습니다.
1. 예수님은 누구신가?
요한복음 1:1-4
1 태초에 말씀이 계시니라 이 말씀이 하나님과 함께 계셨으니 이 말씀은 곧 하나님이시니라 2 그가 태초에 하나님과 함께 계셨고 3 만물이 그로 말미암아 지은 바 되었으니 지은 것이 하나도 그가 없이는 된 것이 없느니라 4 그 안에 생명이 있었으니 이 생명은 사람들의 빛이라
성탄절은 예수님의 탄생을 축하하는 날입니다.
즉, 이 날은 예수님의 생일입니다.
우리는 성탄절의 주인인 예수님이 누구이신지 알아야 합니다.
예수님은 하나님과 동등한 위격을 가지고 있습니다.
예수님은 세계 창조 이전의 영원에서 하나님과 함께 계셨습니다.
예수님은 모든 만물의 근원이시며, 그 분 안에는 빛과 생명이 있습니다.
2. 사람은 무엇인가?
요한복음 1:9-13
9 참 빛 곧 세상에 와서 각 사람에게 비추는 빛이 있었나니 10 그가 세상에 계셨으며 세상은 그로 말미암아 지은 바 되었으되 세상이 그를 알지 못하였고 11 자기 땅에 오매 자기 백성이 영접하지 아니하였으나 12 영접하는 자 곧 그 이름을 믿는 자들에게는 하나님의 자녀가 되는 권세를 주셨으니 13 이는 혈통으로나 육정으로나 사람의 뜻으로 나지 아니하고 오직 하나님께로부터 난 자들이니라
예수님은 빛과 생명으로 사람들에게 찾아오셨습니다.
그러나 사람들은 예수님을 알지 못했고, 예수님을 그들의 구원자로 고백하지 않았습니다.
하나님은 자신의 생명의 주인과 근원인 예수님을 모르는 사람들을 죄인으로 규정하셨습니다.
그러나 하나님은 예수님을 자신의 구원자로 고백하는 사람들을 더 이상 죄인이라 부르지 않았습니다. 오히려 하나님은 그들에게 하나님의 자녀가 되는 권세를 주셨습니다.
이 고백은 하나님의 자녀와 죄인을 규정하는 기준이 됩니다.
3. 교회는 무엇인가?
당신은 예수님에 대한 개인적인 고백을 통해 하나님의 자녀로 인정받게 되었습니다.
당신의 죄과 관련된 문제가 예수님에 대한 당신의 믿음을 통해 해결된 것입니다.
그렇다면 죄에 대한 문제가 사라졌는데도 불구하고 교회가 존재하는 이유는 무엇일까요?
요한복음은 예수님 안에 있는 생명과 빛에 대해 증언합니다.
예수님의 은혜로 생명과 빛이 각 교회의 몫에 따라 나누어집니다.
교회는 예수 그리스도를 믿는 사람들의 공동체입니다.
교회가 존재하는 이유는 예수님이 우리 안에 계시면서 은혜를 주고 계시기 때문입니다.
예수님은 그리스도인들이 모이기를 원하시며, 교회를 통해 생명과 빛이 세상에 전해지길 원하십니다.
4. 말씀이 육신이 된 이유는?
요한복음 1:14; 17-18
14 말씀이 육신이 되어 우리 가운데 거하시매 우리가 그의 영광을 보니 아버지의 독생자의 영광이요 은혜와 진리가 충만하더라

17 율법은 모세로 말미암아 주어진 것이요 은혜와 진리는 예수 그리스도로 말미암아 온 것이라 18 본래 하나님을 본 사람이 없으되 아버지 품 속에 있는 독생하신 하나님이 나타내셨느니라
왜 예수님이 육신으로 우리에게 오셨는지 아는 것은 매우 중요합니다.
가장 먼저 14절에 나타나는 “육신”에 대한 의미를 알아보아야 합니다.
“육신”은 유한한 인간 존재에 대한 표현으로 하나님의 영원하신 존재와 구별됩니다.
하나님이 이 육신의 차원으로 내려와서 구원을 이루실 수 있다는 그리스도교 사상은 요한복음 저자의 주변 세계의 종교 사상에서 비웃음 거리였습니다.
그러나 그리스도교 교회는 바로 이것을 강력하게 증언하였습니다.
우리는 구약성경을 통해 어떤 사람도 하나님을 볼 수 없다는 사실을 알 수 있습니다.
그런데 놀라운 일이 일어났습니다.
하나님이 스스로를 사람에게 드러내신 것입니다.
이것이 하나님의 자기 계시입니다.
이것이 바로 예수 그리스도입니다.
하나님은 우리의 생명을 살리기 위해, 육신의 형태로 우리에게 오셨습니다.
창조자인 하나님께서 피조물인 사람의 모습으로 나타나셨습니다.
이것이 바로 우리를 향한 하나님의 놀라운 은혜 입니다.
5. 예수님을 믿는다는 것은 무엇인가?
예수님을 믿는다는 것은 무엇입니까?
그것은 말씀이 육신이 되어 온, 예수님의 자기 계시를 전적으로 인정하는 것 입니다.
예수님께 완전히 우리 자신을 개방하고 그 분에게 복종하는 것 입니다.
우리 이 시간, 예수님의 탄생을 축하하며 그 분을 나의 구원자로 고백합시다!
